Patient tutor experienced in both the details and the big picture

My name is Kate, and I have been teaching for more than eleven years. Among other topics, I've taught swimming to preschoolers and retirees, GRE prep for a national company, and am currently an instructor at CU-Boulder teaching college students. I've taught in Spanish and English in the U.S. and Latin America, individually or to classes of 150 students. While I can lecture, I much prefer a student-directed approach that lets students come up with, and then learn how to answer, their questions - starting with learning what questions to ask.

I'm currently completing my Ph.D. in cultural anthropology, which is the study of humans over time. This incredibly vast scope has taught me not only sensitivity and flexibility, but also how to move between specific details and the bigger picture. Basically, as a teacher I try to move between the forest and the trees, and to instill the same excitement for the topic at hand, whether breaststroke or the subjunctive tense in Spanish, that I feel. I don't expect all my students to become anthropologists or Michael Phelps - I just want them to be excited about learning!

Spanish

I started studying Spanish in middle school, more than 18 years ago, and have never stopped. I have lived, worked, and traveled across Latin America, particularly in Chile, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Writing

I think I've always loved writing because I've always loved reading, and the one encouraged the other. I can help you with discovering or shaping your own style, word choice, grammar, tone, and developing and supporting an argument for both fiction and non-fiction works at all levels.

ESL/ESOL

I taught English in Costa Rica and have experience both one-on-one and in groups. I am fluent in Spanish and use that experience to assist me in teaching - not as a crutch! English is a crazy language, but even when it seems there are more exceptions than rules there still *are* rules and patterns to learn and follow. We'll use music, movies, objects, and real-life scenarios and experiences to make the lessons as fun and useful as possible.

GRE

I've tutored students for a national company for the past four years. Though my own background is on the verbal side of the exam (including writing), my specialty is in helping students re-learn (or remember) math tips and tricks to earn extra points. I also focus on GRE test strategies, including how to write 5+ essays, how to use the test format to best advantage, and how to set up and stick to a study schedule.

Proofreading

As a graduate student who has nearly completed her Ph.D., and who has taught undergraduate courses with a heavy writing workload for the past six years, I've spent a lot of time editing papers. I can edit for grammar, spelling, clarity, organization, or any combination of the above. It can be a one-time edit for a paper (I will not, of course, write the paper for you) or an ongoing discussion about writing and communication more generally.

Swimming

I am a former Aquatic Specialist for American Red Cross of Greater Chicago (2 years) - the second-largest chapter in the country. I taught classes from introductory swimming and was a lifeguard instructor in public and private pools, in the inner city and the suburbs. Prior to this position, I managed a busy public swimming pool and beach for four summers. I am a former swim team member and lifeguard who also taught swimming to college students who had never been in deep water before.

Anthropology

I have a master's degree in anthropology with a Ph.D. in progress. Research focus is on cultural anthropology but can also assist with introductory courses in other subfields (archaeology and biological anthropology).
