It should go from the known to the unknown and the simple to the complex. I have taught piano and singing for over 20 years, trained singers and musicians in groups and one on one. I have directed choirs, operas and musicals. I am linguistically flexible being bilingual Arabic/English and well versed in German, French and Italian. I am specialized in the teaching of diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, a very useful pronunciation tool for all. I am deeply interested in diversity and cultural awareness.

I am qualified and experienced in ear training. I spent 5 years studying in London at both Trinity College of Music (which specializes in training teachers of music) and the Royal College of Music (performance). I am thoroughly familiar with the British system of ear training and have had further experience during my years in the USA (MM, Texas, and DMA, Colorado). You can overcome any weakness in aural awareness and training. The training covers pitch matching, awareness of scale degrees, identification of chords in all inversions (open and closed), cadences, rhythmic identification of simple and compound time signatures. Born in Egypt, my mother tongue is English. I have had a lifelong interest in languages and am especially well equipped to handle English. As a musician, I have taught diction in five languages using the International Phonetic Alphabet, a very useful tool in developing excellent pronunciation and diction. I have used English as a writer for several newspapers and for the preparation of all my dissertations for my university degrees: BA (American University in Cairo, Journalism), MM (Texas, Music), and DMA (Colorado University, Singing and Pedagogy). I received my teaching qualifications in London where I lived for over 5 years.
Training pianists from the beginning level up to intermediate (Associated Board of the Royals Schools of Music, London). This includes technical training, familiarizing oneself with the keyboard, the whole instrument, pedals, how the sound is created. The reading of music for pianists (including sight reading), scales, arpeggios, tackling appropriate piano literature, setting realistic goals in acquiring all the necessary skills needed. I believe in a progressive course of study, carefully building up all the skills which must be based on the freedom of the arms, wrists, shoulders and be informed by good posture, a flowing breath and excellent method of practice. After assessing the level of the student, noting all strengths and weaknesses, a tailor made course of study is created to best reinforce good habits and overcome less good ones. Every lesson there will be a carefully laid out plan of action for the following week, attainable and realistic goals are set for the following week. An essential part of training the pianist includes a weekly sight reading and aural training drill. Four hand music is helpful to develop the skill of accompanying and making music with others. The complete musician is the goal of this training.
Using the moveable doh system, I train singers to recognize aurally and visually each interval. When an interval is mastered, sight singing drills are practiced going from simple to more complex. As each new interval is mastered it is added to the drills. This training involves some aural training (ear training) which is tailored to the individual needs and level of the student. The goal is to be able to sight sing fluently any singing line of music that the average singer will encounter in any style from pop to jazz to sacred and musical theater. Sight singing for classical music is the ultimate goal of this training.
The teaching of singing involves a thorough knowledge and awareness of posture, breathing, phonation, the singing voice, its mechanism and structure, vocal literature, aural awareness, knowledge of languages, literature and poetry.
Using the bel canto method, Vaccai and principles of freeing the voice and developing the breath awareness through fine posture, the student is encouraged to sing from the word go. It is by singing, even the simplest song or vocal exercise that we acquire a kinesthetic sense of the singing process. Coordination is the essence of fine singing.
