My students find me patient, understanding, and (occasionally) amusing.

Prior to becoming an English teacher, I worked for a number of years as a writer and editor and have been published in many magazines and newspapers.

I can help with figuring out what the prompt is really asking for, deciding what to write, editing what was written, and proofing before final submission.

I can also help with understanding the sometimes silly, often arbitrary, and never-without-exceptions rules of English grammar and spelling, and how to figure out what words mean without memorizing a dictionary.

English is the way most people in this country communicate, so it is a necessary evil for future engineers, musicians, computer game programmers, ballerinas, and tattoo artists alike. The better one is able to communicate, the less likely one is to feel that no one understands...

Let me help.

Lisa’s subjects

ACT English

ACT English is not as hard as you think it is. Take some time to learn what you need to do to understand the questions and master the test. I can help.

ACT Reading

ACT reading is not as hard as you think it is. If you slow down and focus on the meaning of each sentence and each paragraph as you go, you will see what I mean.

I can help you understand how the questions work, which is more than half the battle, how to knock out the clearly wrong answers, which gets you closer to the one you need, and finally, how to determine which of the remaining answers is most likely to be correct even if you are unsure.

College Counseling

As a certified English teacher for grades 7-12, I have a lot of experience helping students with cover letters, applications, and essays - just the types of things you need to get into the school of your dreams.
I work with essays by using the review feature of MS Word to make suggestions, ask questions, and edit your drafts until we have something we are both happy with.
In addition, I can help with the things you need to succeed once you've been accepted, such as:
-study skills
-test taking
-alleviating test anxiety
-time management
-prioritization
-goal setting
-self advocacy
-attitude adjustment

English

English can be tricky, there are lots of rules for grammar and spelling, and they all have exceptions, but, with the right help, you can master it.

I have been a secondary English teacher for five years and before that I worked as a freelance writer and editor.

There is no doubt in my mind that I can help you master the intricacies of written and spoken English.

ESL/ESOL

In my work as a secondary English teacher, I often encounter students whose grasp of English is below that of their stated grade level. This may be because their native language is something other than English, or because they missed a lot of school when they were younger, or for other reasons. In all cases, they respond well to the patient, deliberate approach I use to help them improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.

Literature

As a licensed secondary English teacher and a life-long reader I can help you unravel the tangled web of terms and plot that make up most lit-based exams.

Even if you don't love to read, you can learn to pass these exams.

Proofreading

Proofreading is very detail-oriented, but not really very hard.

I have worked as an editor, copy-editor, and proofreader, and can help you to proof your own or your pal's work before handing it in to avoid losing points for errors you could have corrected.

PSAT

Preparation for the PSAT is mainly about general test taking skills and secondarily about the subject matter. In most cases, even an average student has learned the vast majority of the factual information required by the time this test arrives on the horizon.
As a licensed teacher of secondary English, I am able to help with the language-based aspects of the test - reviewing grammar rules, vocabulary, and important concepts, as well as the test taking tips that are useful for any of the many standardized tests that come after this one.

Public Speaking

I have made more presentations (extemporaneous and prepared) than I can count, on dozens of different subjects, in front of small and large crowds -- and that doesn't count time spent in front of a classroom, which is a form of public speaking where your audience is often there by force rather than choice, making them harder to address.

There are many aspects to public speaking with which a tutor can assist. Some of the most obvious are: what you say, how you say it, how you illustrate or amplify it, what you do with your hands when you're talking, eye contact with your audience, creating and delivering presentation aids such as PowerPoint, stage presence, handling problems ranging from non-working technology to not connecting with your audience, and much more.

Let me help you master this essential skill so you can achieve whatever you want in and outside of school.

Reading

Reading tests take all the fun out of reading, but you can pass them if you slow down and if you know how to consider the relationship of the question to the text. Let me help you do well on your reading tests so you can get back to reading, or skateboarding.

SAT Reading

SAT reading is not as hard as you think it is. If you slow down and focus on the meaning of each sentence you will see what I mean.

I can help you understand how the questions work, which is more than half the battle, how to knock out the clearly wrong answers, which gets you closer to the one you need, and finally, how to determine which of the remaining answers is most likely to be correct even if you are unsure.

SAT Writing

SAT writing is not as hard as you think it is, focusing mostly on vocabulary for the short answer questions.

I can help you understand how the questions work, which is more than half the battle, and how to knock out the clearly wrong answers, which gets you closer to the one you need, and finally, how to determine which of the remaining answers is most likely to be correct even if you are unsure.

Study Skills

I am a certified teacher for grades 7-12 and, in addition to English, I have taught several classes in the types of skills you need to be a successful student.
Some of those include:
-study skills
-test taking
-alleviating test anxiety
-time management
-prioritization
-goal setting
-self advocacy
-attitude adjustment
Whatever you need to become a better student, I can help.
Contact me to talk about your specific needs and how I can work with you to meet them.
