ACT English

I have three years of in classroom experience teaching test prep at the high school level. I hold a Master's degree in education and I have real strategies that can help you learn to conquer this test. It isn't a test that tests what you know, it is a test that tests how well you take this particular exam. I will help you through it so that you get your highest personal score.

ACT Reading

It isn't a test that tests what you know, it is a test that tests how well you take this particular exam. I will help you through it so that you get your highest personal score.

ADD/ADHD

I have extensive experience working with children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I find that a great many of these children are actually gifted and bored, and not necessarily aflicted with ADD/ADHD. However, the students that display clinical signs of the aforementioned disorders, require patience and engagement. Highly focused, rapidly changing and engaging activities are tactics that have proved successful in working with students with these limitations. "Limitations" is an unfair word that labels the kids. Therefore, we will call ADD/ADHD a "pot hole" in the road to success and one that is easily filled!

American History

History can be confusing because of the timelines. Let's talk and I will show you how to keep all that straight so that history can come alive for you! I have extensive teaching experience and will combine that with my love for American history so that it helps you!

Anthropology

If you need help in Anthropology, this is a great place to start. I have 22 years of teaching experience. My master's degree in education has opened doors that have allowed opportunites to teach all history, including the study of the origin of man.

I was lucky enough to study under Richard Leaky in college for one class/workshop. My experience with hands on Anthropology is also extensive because of the access I have had to dig sites. I grew up and studied in New Mexico and was able to work on Anasazi dig sites.

I would be happy to share my experiences with you!

Art History

If you are a visual learner struggling with any kind of History, I would love to put my expertise to use for you. Art history is a visual representation of most other times in history. It is a great way to connect with other subjects.

I hold a master's degree in education and Bachelor's degree in design. The history of Art has been at the center of what I teach for the last 20 years.

A little eye training will help you discern the subtleties in the eras of art history while you are pleasantly surprised to discover cross curricular connections to other subjects.

Aspergers

I hold a master's degree in special education and was fortunate enough to develop a teaching method that really helps those with Asperger's, succeed. I move at their pace and help keep them focused by allowing them to learn in a manner that best suits them. Pace and perimeter are something they dictate while focus and follow through are what I guide. My results were conclusively successful. The learning rate increased across the board. Reasoning, language and basic skill were improved and now I am compiling all of that in a study that will, hopefully, result in a PhD.

Astronomy

I have had some very wonderful opportunities in the study of Astronomy. This is what will help me help students understand and grasp the concepts which may be difficult. I use the methods taught to me by my Astronomy mentor, Dr. Claude Tombaugh. He is the astronomer who discovered Pluto. His approach was so easy that I believe everyone can benefit.

Autism

What beautiful minds are those stricken with Autism. If you need help dealing with strategies in learning for your autistic child, I may have the solution. I have a master's degree in educational leadership with a focus in special education. Some of my techniques have proven so effective that they are award winning. I would love to share those with you. Let's chat! Together we can make a big difference!

Bible Studies

I have 12 years of teaching experience in the Christian classroom and Sunday School format.

My education includes in depth Biblical studies that look at the Bible in comparison to other religious texts as well as the definitive word of God.

As a teacher of literature, I am able to make the Bible approachable to those who are most confused by the language. As a Christian I am able to make the text tangible to anyone, especially those outside the faith.

Dyslexia

I currently hold a master's degree in special education. This degree has led me to develop a teaching method applied in the classroom that focuses on the learning style, and more importantly, the learning pace of the individual. I have used, with great success, this method in the classroom for the last 7 years. Those with dyslexia will find a great deal of success when they are not rushed. A concentration on phonics and rote is effective. My method combines that with the use of evaluation, frequent checks for understanding and placement inside the learning style that fits them best.

English

I have 22 years of teaching experience both in studios and the traditional classroom. I have taught English for grade levels 7- 12.

I can help you master reading, writing and verbal skills. You will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of grammar as well as literary tools like voice, tone and intent.

English can be confusing because for every rule there is an exception. Let's map that out together so you can find success!

General Music

With a bachelor's degree in performance, theatre, music and dance, general music is a skill that is a "must" to survive in the industry.

I have taught general music, theory and basic sight reading for the last 22 years in the classroom.

I have discovered that a general music foundation, helps students succeed across the board. They are especially successful in areas like math and reasoning. This is because of the way music and music knowledge help you think. You find patterns and systems in things that help navigate tougher subjects like math.

Hard Of Hearing

I have 12 years of teaching experience integrating ASL into the classroom. The bulk of this experience comes with working with non verbal special needs kids. It was the most effective way to get them to communicate.

I have also led 2 different groups of students to engage in ASL so that they were able to pass proficiency tests in the language.

I received my training from a combination of college studies and direct instruction from deaf community members in my various work places.

I have passed proficiency tests for schools I have worked in as well as for Walt Disney World. I was able to serve as a translator in emergency situations. It is important to note that I am NOT a translator by certification.

My training in ASL as well as my extensive background in speech and diction are blended together in a method that helps those who are hard of hearing not only get a handle on their hearing loss, but take control of their own language skill and ability.

SAT Reading

I have three years of in classroom experience teaching test prep at the high school level. I hold a Master's degree in education and I have real strategies that can help you learn to conquer this test. It isn't a test that tests what you know, it is a test that tests how well you take this particular exam. I will help you through it so that you get your highest personal score.

Special Needs

I hold a master's degree in education with a concentration in special needs. I have taught special needs kids in the classroom for the past 8 years and was able to develop a teaching method that caters to the needs of each student, regardless of disability. This method pulled the student out of the chaotic atmosphere of a general Ed classroom and partnered them with a student I trained in techniques I developed. These techniques proved so effective that I was nominated for the national award, "Outstanding Learning Environment". I have extensive experience with most disabilities.

Speech

I have an extensive background in speech performance and education. My experience with teaching speech began 22 years ago.

My method includes breathing to find your center, and projecting from that core. You will learn to control your breath, projection, and lexicon. Further, I concentrate on muscular control to help you increase your pronunciation and understanding. Diction training to improve overall communication. The muscular work will help eliminate things like slurs and lisps. The breathing will help control things like stutters. Lastly, I will help understand and improve your temporal resonance auditory processing so that you can more effectively hear yourself when communicating.

The holistic view includes automatic self esteem increases with specific work on taking control of your own eloquence.

You will find energy and focus increases as well as a strong sense of control.

Let's chat!

Study Skills

I was a classroom teacher of K-12 for the past 22 years. I taught both core classes and elective classes. In every subject taught, I would build my curriculum on the strong foundation of "ability to study". If students did not have the right study skills, they simply didn't succeed. I started with an assessment that determined their best method of learning. Not all students are the same. Scores and attitudes rose, dramatically, when the student connected with the right learning style. It was truly a joy to watch.

Theatre

I have been performing and teaching theatre arts for the past 22 years. I have performed professionally in 3 different states and taught in 4. I hold a bachelor's degree in theatre arts. I have studied and received additional training in New York City and Chicago. I have also begun work on my PhD in theatre from CU Boulder.

World History

History can be confusing because of timelines. I can help with that and so much more that tends to make the subject confusing. I have strategies that have worked throughout the years that I can share with you to make history come alive! I have 25 years of teaching experience and would love to put that to work to help build your success!

Writing

I have been teaching for the last 22 years. In those years I have taught English to grades 7-12. I concentrated on writing and reading comprehension.

In the writing component of my approach, I really worked with the students on format, grammar and the strength of their voice in their writing.

I also concentrated on varying styles of writing such as: persuasive, expository, prose and poetry.

I would love to help!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
