Studies have shown that the best way to accelerate your student's learning is to hire an individual tutor. A great tutor can cover twice the material in the same amount of time it takes a teacher with 30 students in a class. My promise: your student will get great grades/scores and be less stressed while doing it.
Here's what I offer to each student:
-Immediate results & customized individual feedback
-Keep track of what your student needs to focus on daily, weekly, and for the whole semester.
-The insights, tips, and methods that I learned scoring in the 99th percentile for the SAT and graduating in the top 7% of my graduating class in college (5000+ students). I've been able to replicate excellent grades and amazing SAT/ACT scores for countless students.
Here's who I work with:
I do not do drop-in "night before my midterm" panic tutoring sessions. My incredibly effective methods do not work if we've only got 10 hours before an exam and that's all you are interested in. If you are looking for a tutor to help really turn things around for the semester and can commit to 4+ weeks of at minimum 1-2 hours a week, then I'm your tutor, and I'll help you reach and exceed your goals.
I graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from college with a degree in economics. I excelled generally in all subjects in K-12 through college. My academic success arose from being a hard worker and having a good system of learning in place, not from being a naturally gifted student.
One of the greatest secrets of "A-students" is not that they are naturally gifted, but that they work smart and fail often. Learning and and academic success come from learning from your failures before you actually get graded on them. In my sessions, we make mistakes early, so we do not make them on the test.
I specialize in tutoring students in economics, SAT/ACT prep, and math. I embrace the 'flipped classroom model,' which means I typically assign students material to read and problems to try before our session. In my sessions, we follow an agenda: diagnose the problem, test the student's learning, review the answer, and repeat. We spend more time applying skills and less time doing boring stuff that doesn't enhance learning.
In the past, I have typically worked with high school students and college freshmen but can work with any level if it is within my knowledge area. I try to tailor learning styles to achieve understanding and skill demonstration by any and all means. If my 'system' doesn't work, we'll find another way to get the material across.
I am organized, prompt, and hate wasting someone's time and money. I also embrace technology to make learning more effective and efficient. Send me a note and we'll get started!
I use the flipped model here, where I will assign a short youtube video on the topic we are working on. I expect the student to watch and try a few problems. We will then spend our session working on what the student is having trouble with. The goal is to achieve certain objectives centered around school or mastery of a subject.
I start with an interview to determine what the areas of weakness are and to establish a rapport with the student. Math is one of those effort-intensive subjects where you will get more than a few wrong before getting them all right, which is our goal! Then, each session will start with the 'flipped model'. This means that I will have the student watch a 5-10 minute YouTube video on the topic and try a few problems as homework. Then, when we have our session, I will work with the student to pinpoint where they are doing things incorrectly. After fixing it, we will verify the student has it down before moving on to other things.
I begin with ascertaining what the problem is, whether it is comprehension and vocabulary to the student knowing how to pronounce letters, sounds, and words. Then, I try to quickly build confidence and teach good reading habits involving keeping a dictionary handy, sounding out words, and how the student can test him or herself to make sure it is sinking in.
-Identify patterns in pronunciation, sounds, and words that cause trouble
-Develop practice plan to make correct spelling, pronunciation, and translation from hearing it to spelling it
-Develop long term learning plan based around reading to learn how to spell.
-Utilize free online sources
