I have taught English at a basic, intermediate and advanced level in various language institutes, both in Mexico and in the United States. Specifically, I have taught basic English literacy as well as conversational English for personal or work-related usage. As a teacher at the high school level, I have worked with students guiding them to enhance their writing skills, from creating proper thesis statements to writing essays on different subject matter, using proper grammar and expanding vocabulary. I also have worked with students on expanding their reading comprehension of different types of literary material as well as practice research techniques for effective writing.
Students will explore different literary genres: short story, novel, essays, poems, and plays, through analysis of specific literary elements such as theme, setting, plot, character, point of view, and tone. Students will analyze literary material through active discussion and drama games which seek to enhance points of identification with diverse subject matter and awareness of diverse cultural perspectives.
I am an actor and theater director with over 20 years performance experience and voice work training.
I am an experienced performance coach, specifically for the development of effective speaking to an audience in order to communicate content that informs, influences and/or entertains. I guide the speaker in the exploration of the interplay between breath, voice, body and imagination in communicating feeling and intention with the purpose of delivering precise meaning.
Specifically, I work with breathing, resonance, proper diction, speech in impromptu as well as prepared public speaking, text work, voice in movement, and presence on stage.
I have taught theatre, speech/public speaking, and basic and advanced acting skills to students at all levels, incorporating creative drama, pantomime, improvisational theater exercises and text analysis. I have also implemented exercises for the development of written and oral communication skills through research, analysis of diverse literature and creation of original written material.
Students are guided in their reading practices according to their specific reading goals, be it simple reading comprehension through the analysis, compare and contrast of different reading material from diverse genres: works of fiction and non-fiction, novels, essays, poems, plays. Students are lead to engage in discussions and writing assignment in order to explore subjects such as theme, character, setting, tone, point of view and plot.
I am a native Spanish speaker and 100 percent bilingual in both English and Spanish. I began tutoring Spanish and English when I was in high school as a peer tutor for Japanese and Korean students. I expanded my experience as a Spanish and English teacher when I worked for a Language Institute in New York City, teaching immigrant students from Europe, Asia and Latin America. I teach basic, intermediate and advanced level Spanish.
My teaching strategies introduce the students to grammar usage and both oral and reading comprehension as well as proper writing skills. Students engage in dynamic oral exchanges of ideas using varied thematic information and proper diction. I incorporate drama games as a tool for learning and practicing Spanish in order to motivate students in their learning processes and to enhance vocabulary acquisition and conversational skills.
I have been an actor and a theater director for more than twenty years, acting and directing professionally in both Mexico City and New York. I received a BA in Speech Communication, an MA in Drama Therapy from New York University, and an MFA in Theatre: Contemporary Performance from Naropa University. I have also been a drama teacher and speech instructor, working with students at the elementary, middle and high school level, and with college students seeking a degree in the arts and/or in education. I have engaged in community theatre as well as educational theatre as a member of various repertory theatre companies.
In tutoring theatre I implement the following teaching objectives:
1. The student develops interpersonal skills and problem-solving capabilities through interaction and artistic sharing with the teacher, who guides the student in exploring his/her own creative process.
2. The student understands and applies the creative process to fundamental skills of acting, playwriting, and directing.
3. The student understands and relates the role of theatre arts to culture and history.
4. The student analyzes and assesses the characteristics, merits, and meanings of traditional and modern forms of dramatic expression.
5. The student explores and applies connections between theatre and other disciplines.
More specific theatre tasks are explored according to the particular needs of the student or the dramatic forms being explored in theatre class. These can include: creative drama games, improvisation techniques, pantomime, reader's theatre, text analysis and scene exploration, and puppetry, amongst others.
Students practice writing skills through formal and informal writing assignments, keeping a log of their work for consistent guided revision and evaluation of their writing progress through proper criteria and learning rubrics. They previously are introduced to pre-writing strategies in order to prepare for specific writing assignments.
