In order to help you or your child, I would suggest a pretest to learn some things about their 'learning style' and base my tutoring on those techniques which would enhance their ability to assimilate and retrieve information in a manner that demonstrates proficiency and skill.
I love learning so much, I developed my own system for committing unrelated information to memory and how to retrieve it when needed. This was necessary in order to pass rigorous exams on homeopathic medicine profiles. I developed my own study guides through Word documents and iPod recordings. I started university without having any college prep courses in high school because I went to technical high school for commercial art during my junior and senior years. At the placement office of the tech school I told them I was ready for work and they laughed me out of there telling me I needed a 4 year degree!
Almost ten years later I graduated from the University of Michigan. I had to learn how to learn and part of that adventure was taking classes in Learning and Memory, The Psychology of Perception, the Psychology of Motivation as well as the Sociobiology of Women and others that gave me an understanding of how and why people do what they do. But I had to learn how to write in order to convince my professors that I learned the material and graduated from a University.
"I just wanted to say thank you! [My daughter] was so excited after you left yesterday. She said the way you explained her biology made so much more sense to her and she was so excited she actually understood what she was doing."--BC
"(My son)finally got his psychology exam result. He got 83%! Thank you for your help."--KJ
I successfully completed BIO 201 and 202 at the Front Range Community College with an A average. These classes are the Anatomy/Physiology classes required for the Nursing program. This is despite the fact that I did not have the prerequisite science and biology classes. Rather I tested out. Even though I had an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, my studies in Classical Homeopathy required these biological sciences in order to get advanced certification. This forced me to 'get up to speed' with how to tackle a subject that I had no previous college level science courses.
I have taken biological science classes, after testing out of the pre-requisites, recently at FRCC: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Human Diseases. Part of the reason I decided to tutor is because I had to learn how to study these subjects that I NEVER had a background in. I am a Phi Theta Kappa scholar as a result of maintaining a 3.8 GPA at FRCC.
I have been certified in Commercial Art. This required years of drawing in pencil, pastel and pen & ink drawing before computer graphics came along. "Rendering" is a lost art, because of this. I teach how to represent a three dimensional object on a two dimensional plane. How to sketch for a composition is another skill I pass on to my painting students as well.
Beside taking honors composition in High School, I took English composition in college and was required to take classes at the University of Michigan that had a writing requirement in order to graduate. These classes were tailored to writing expository essays for assignments and tests. After graduation, my employer paid for many business writing courses in order to communicate concisely in memo forms, etc. Nonetheless, my forte is not writing, but coaching people on how to learn that maximizes the time spent studying or practicing a subject or skill.
The study of microbes (organisms that are too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope) Additionally, Microbiology studies diseases and conditions that arise from infection by microbes (bacteria, fungi, mold, and viruses.) I tested out of the prerequisites in biology at Front Range Community College in order to take BIO 204 (Microbiology) and BIO 201 and 202 (Anatomy and Physiology I & II.) These were required as prerequisites for the Nursing Program as well as for advanced certification in Clinical Homeopathy. For Microbiology I completed several research papers using references from WHO and scientific journals to tackle epidemic diseases such as AIDS, TB, and Leprosy. Even though I did not have a science background, I figured out how to successfully master the lab work and journaling as well as achieve a GPA of 3.84. This has helped me to treat my patients with acute and chronic illnesses as well as prepare for the board exams for the Center for Homeopathic Certification at the national level.
I completed and got a 4.0 at Front Range Community College in Human Nutrition. I also completed an online seminar with Kim Elia, a certified nutritionist on Nutrition for Homeopaths. Therefore I understand the basics of nutrition, that is calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, co-enzymes, fiber, minerals and micronutrients. I also studied the digestive organs of the human body starting with the oral and nasal cavities and the processes of elimination, absorption of nutrients, nutritional deficiencies, malnutrition, and nutritionally related diseases such as diabetes miletus, GERD, anemia and so forth. With Mr. Elia's class I also learned about detoxification, fasting, colon therapy, raw foods vs. whole foods, the role of the skin in nutrition, detecting deficiencies from hair, skin and nails and nutritional therapies for advanced diseases.
I have been certified in commercial art before computer graphics and Photoshop were invented. I was trained to use acrylics, water color and tempora paints to illustrate graphics. Later in life I took up oil painting on canvass. My work has been displayed in juried shows all along the Front Range and even in Coos Bay Oregon. My painting technique is informed by those earlier illustration styles, so I start my students with composition and color theory before executing a full painting.
I have completed the following science classes (without prerequisites) at Front Range Community College with a GPA of 3.84:
Anatomy and Physiology I
Anatomy and Physiology II
I have 20 upper level credits in psychology as part of my Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. Of course I aced Developmental Psychology at the Front Range Community College Ft. Collins campus, as one of the prerequisites for Nursing, 4 years ago. Beside Psych 101, I've completed classes such as Psychology of Motivation, Psychology of Learning and Memory, Psychology of Perception, Pathopsychology, and Advanced Psychopathology.
I use testing on the subject to discover their core learning style before progressing to coaching them on how to process information that they will be tested on, regardless of the subject matter. Learning styles are how a person processes information and is able to incorporate it into the long term memory for retrieval. Examples of learning styles are kinesthetic, auditory, and visual. A kinesthetic learning style requires that the person be able to move their body or manipulate objects in order to reinforce information. Other students need to visualize the subject matter--not necessarily read about it. By understanding how to maximize time spent studying a subject or a skill, the student gets more out of their lessons and assignments. When coaching someone on taking competency tests, we also deal with test anxiety and the best testing style that works for them. Once we discover this, I create sample tests for them to take under test conditions. Essentially, I coach people on how to learn, rather than what to learn.
An "A"-rated Tutor — I needed urgent help for my 19 year old son, Nyall, for tutoring/revision work in Psychology with an exam looming. Darlene responded to that need immediately and organized a series of tutoring sessions. She was extremely professional and first identified his style of learning so that she could tailor the sessions to best meet his style of learning. This was valuable information and he has some ...
