Bible Studies
I first studied the Bible as a boarding student at an American Baptist prep school, the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. As an undergraduate English major at Yale, I was required to become familiar with both the New Testament and the Hebrew Scriptures. Subsequently as an adult I completed the intensive three-year Bethel Bible Series at Calvary Lutheran Church, Honolulu, Hawaii. Along the way, I taught both adult and middle-school-level Sunday school at the ELCA Lutheran churches where my family and I were members. Nowadays I am a nightly Bible reader as well as a regular church attender (Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Boulder). Since becoming a Catholic in January 2004, I have served as a trained lector reading the first and second lessons from the Bible at both weekday and Sunday Masses. I have also read portions of the Bible in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Indonesian. In short, I am very familiar with the Bible.
Elementary (K-6th)
Although a retired university English professor, I am an active grandfather of an elementary-school-aged girl and am currently tutoring a ten-year-old three times a week in English/writing. As a professional writer/editor, I am really enjoying myself and learning a lot from the experience. The student, a girl who is being home-schooled, is enthusiastic and so is her mother. I would thus be delighted to have more elementary-school-aged clients and hope that I can have the chance to help you and your children.
ESL/ESOL
From January to June 2012 I was a volunteer teacher in Indonesian Borneo, where I taught English as a Second Language to high-school freshmen, sophomores, and seniors. Over the years I have taught English to students from Europe, Africa, and Asia. In fall 2010 I taught English intensively to a Spanish wind-turbine technician working in Boulder, Colorado. Prior to that, I taught English to a young woman from Seychelles who was visiting her aunt in Boulder. Before leaving for Indonesia in December 2011, I tutored a Czech physician in English. I enjoy working with international students and adults, so if you are interested in learning or improving your English and you are in the Greater Boulder area, let's "talk."
German
Although I am an English native speaker, born in New York City, I was an Exchange Student at Heidelberg University as an undergraduate, a German minor at Yale, and an instructor later on at the University of Maryland in Germany. During the 43 years of my marriage to a German national, moreover, we spoke mainly German at home. As a result of all that, many Germans think I am a native speaker (from another part of Germany!), and I consider myself bilingual. Recently, during a volunteer-teaching stint in Indonesian Borneo, I tutored two German-Russian young people in their "father tongue," German, and, should you be interested, I'd be happy to tutor you as well.
Grammar
As a Ph.D in English language and literature from Yale, retired English professor, high school English teacher, and long-time tutor (three years with WyzAnt alone), I have a strong knowledge of English grammar and have taught the subject many times. As an ESL tutor and former East-West Center (Hawaii) staff member, moreover, I have years of experience working with non-native English speakers, persons of all national, cultural, and religious backgrounds. If you believe I can help you, don't hesitate to contact me via WyzAnt, which is a highly efficient, economical, and innovative national tutoring company. Thanks!
Proofreading
As a multi-published author, professional editor, and retired university English professor, I have lots of experience proofreading both my own manuscripts and those of others. I can help you submit clear, concise, persuasive essays, chapters, articles, dissertations, and books every time--even at a distance (by email). Thanks.
Study Skills
As a retired college professor (English) and dean and, most recently, as a volunteer high-school English teacher in an English-language school in Indonesian Central Borneo, I feel well-qualified to assist a wide range of students with improving their study skills. Included would be reading for content, time management, setting up assignments, researching papers on the internet (and in the library), thinking critically, and reviewing one's work/proofreading.
Writing
As a multi-published author and professional editor as well as a retired university English professor, I have lots of experience writing and teaching others how to write effectively. I hope I'll have the opportunity to help you. For more on my background, please see my WyzAnt profile. Thanks. Reynold F.
