My name is Reynold F. I am a retired university English professor and dean, with three degrees in English from Yale (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.). I received my undergraduate degree "magna cum laude" and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society in June 1960. My GREs in 1961 were in the 99th %ile in the general exam and the 97 %ile in the English subject exam. Besides scholarly articles and chapters, I have written and published three non-academic books--A WORLD TREASURY OF FOLK WISDOM (HarperCollins, 1992), WISDOM--DAILY REFLECTIONS FOR A NEW ERA (St. Mary's Press, 2000), and WISING UP--A YOUTH GUIDE TO GOOD LIVING (Cowley Publications; Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2007). My autobiography, STORIES I REMEMBER--MY PILGRIMAGE TO WISDOM, came out from Wisdom Foundation Publishing in November 2009. I have also edited two books, now published, and have assisted a half dozen people in Hawaii, Maryland, Texas, California, and Colorado to strengthen their writing. I have been involved as a mentor in the World Congress of Youth, most recently in Morocco (2003), and have planned and coordinated two international youth conferences, one in Indonesia (2001) and the other in Crestone, Colorado (2003). I first tutored as a recent college graduate in Chicago in the '60s and more recently have taught 11th-grade A.P. English in a private school in Hawaii.
I like working with young people and others and believe I can help them improve their reading, writing, creativity, and critical-thinking skills. I also know how to approach tutoring in ways that are both effective and fun. A former East-West Center staff member in Hawaii, I have a lot of experience assisting students from other cultures and languages. As a college advisor, I can help students with college-application essays as well as preparation for the general and English sections of the PSAT, SAT, ACT exams and AP tests in English. I have tutored in English as a second language and have edited academic articles and doctoral dissertations. In addition, I am fluent in German and can help those wishing to learn or improve their "Deutsch."
My tutoring work is a source of joy as I see individuals grow academically. It is an opportunity too for me to supplement my retirement income. I really like the chance to continue teaching and look forward to working with some of you reading this background statement. Greetings from North Boulder, where I tutor students in my home office. I am also comfortable tutoring students by phone or Skype.
Note: I have worked with WyzAnt since January 2010 and am pleased with their system.
Sincerely,
Reynold F.
