My name is Reynold F. I am a retired university English professor, dean, and academic vice-president with three degrees in English from Yale (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.). I received my undergraduate degree "magna cum laude" and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society in June 1960. I also spent my junior year as an exchange student at Heidelberg University, Germany. My GREs in 1961 were in the 99th percentile in the general exam and the 97th in the English subject exam. Besides scholarly articles and chapters, I have written and published four non-academic books--A WORLD TREASURY OF FOLK WISDOM (HarperCollins, 1992; co-authored), WISDOM--DAILY REFLECTIONS FOR A NEW ERA (St. Mary's Press, 2000), WISING UP--A YOUTH GUIDE TO GOOD LIVING (Cowley Publications; Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2007; co-authored); and LIVING IN THE POWER ZONE--HOW RIGHT USE OF POWER CAN TRANSFORM YOUR RELATIONSHIPS (Many Realms Publishing, 2013; co-authored). My autobiography, STORIES I REMEMBER--MY PILGRIMAGE TO WISDOM, came out from Wisdom Foundation Publishing in November 2009. I have also edited two books, now published, and have assisted several dozen people in Hawaii, Maryland, Texas, California, Colorado, and Indonesian Borneo to strengthen their writing. I have been involved as a mentor in the World Congress of Youth, most recently in Morocco (2003), and have planned and coordinated two international youth conferences, one in Indonesia (2001) and the other in Crestone, Colorado (2003). I first tutored as a recent college graduate in Chicago in the '60s and have taught 11th-grade A.P. English in a private school in Hawaii plus 9th-, 10th-, and 12th-grade English in an international school in Indonesia. Finally, I have helped home-school a ten-year-old girl in writing.
I like working with young people and others and believe I can help them improve their reading, writing, creativity, and critical-thinking skills. I also know how to approach tutoring in ways that are both effective and fun. A former East-West Center staff member in Hawaii, I have a lot of experience assisting students from other cultures and languages. As a college advisor, I can help students with college-application essays as well as preparation for the general and English sections of the PSAT, SAT, ACT exams, AP, and GRE tests in English. I have tutored English as a second language and have edited academic articles and doctoral dissertations. In addition, I am fluent in German and can help those wishing to learn or improve their "Deutsch."
My tutoring work is a source of joy as I see individuals grow academically. It is an opportunity too for me to supplement my retirement income. I really like the chance to continue teaching and look forward to working with some of you reading this background statement. Greetings from North Boulder, Colorado, where I tutor students in my home office. I am also comfortable tutoring students by phone or Skype.
Note: I have worked with WyzAnt since January 2010 and am pleased with their system. They are a reliable, continuously improving company with thousands of satisfied students all over the United States.
I first studied the Bible as a boarding student at an American Baptist prep school, Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. As an undergraduate English major at Yale, I was required to become familiar with both the New Testament and the Hebrew Scriptures. Subsequently as an adult I completed the intensive three-year Bethel Bible Series at Calvary Lutheran Church, Honolulu, Hawaii. Along the way, I taught both adult and middle-school-level Sunday school at the ELCA Lutheran churches where my family and I were members. I am a frequent Bible reader as well as a regular church attender. I became Catholic in January 2004 and have served as a trained lector reading the first and second lessons from the Bible at both weekday and Sunday Masses. Since January 2011 my wife and I joined St. John's Episcopal Church, Boulder, where I have continued Biblical reading and studies. I have also read portions of the Bible in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Indonesian. In short, I am very familiar with the Bible.
Although a retired university English professor, I am an active grandfather of an elementary-school-aged girl and am currently tutoring a ten-year-old three times a week in English/writing. As a professional writer/editor, I am really enjoying myself and learning a lot from the experience. The student, a girl who is being home-schooled, is enthusiastic and so is her mother. I would thus be delighted to have more elementary-school-aged clients and hope that I can have the chance to help you and your children.
From January to June 2012 I was a volunteer teacher in Indonesian Borneo, where I taught English as a Second Language to high-school freshmen, sophomores, and seniors. Over the years I have taught English to students from Europe, Africa, and Asia. In fall 2010 I taught English intensively to a Spanish wind-turbine technician working in Boulder, Colorado. Prior to that, I taught English to a young woman from Seychelles who was visiting her aunt in Boulder. Before leaving for Indonesia in December 2011, I tutored a Czech physician in English. I enjoy working with international students and adults, so if you are interested in learning or improving your English and you are in the Greater Boulder area, let's "talk."
Although I am an English native speaker, born in New York City, I was an Exchange Student at Heidelberg University as an undergraduate, a German minor at Yale, and an instructor later on at the University of Maryland in Germany. During the 43 years of my marriage to a German national, moreover, we spoke mainly German at home. As a result of all that, many Germans think I am a native speaker (from another part of Germany!), and I consider myself bilingual. Recently, during a volunteer-teaching stint in Indonesian Borneo, I tutored two German-Russian young people in their "father tongue," German, and, should you be interested, I'd be happy to tutor you as well.
As a Ph.D in English language and literature from Yale, retired English professor, high school English teacher, and long-time tutor (three years with WyzAnt alone), I have a strong knowledge of English grammar and have taught the subject many times. As an ESL tutor and former East-West Center (Hawaii) staff member, moreover, I have years of experience working with non-native English speakers, persons of all national, cultural, and religious backgrounds. If you believe I can help you, don't hesitate to contact me via WyzAnt, which is a highly efficient, economical, and innovative national tutoring company. Thanks!
As a multi-published author, professional editor, and retired university English professor, I have lots of experience proofreading both my own manuscripts and those of others. I can help you submit clear, concise, persuasive essays, chapters, articles, dissertations, and books every time--even at a distance (by email). Thanks.
As a retired university English professor and dean (also academic vice president), I have tutored a number of high-school students in preparing for the "English" side of the SATs as well as college students getting ready to do well on their Graduate Record Exams (GREs). If you need tutoring to prepare for the reading, logic, and/or writing sides of the SATs, please get in touch. Thank you. Reynold F., WyzAnt Tutor, Boulder
As a former university English professor and dean, I have helped perhaps a half dozen WyzAnt students as of January 2014 prepare for the English sections of the SAT exam. My students tell me that our sessions have given them the knowledge, strategies, and confidence to do well, or at least better, on the test.
As a retired college professor (English) and dean and, most recently, as a volunteer high-school English teacher in an English-language school in Indonesian Central Borneo, I feel well-qualified to assist a wide range of students with improving their study skills. Included would be reading for content, time management, setting up assignments, researching papers on the internet (and in the library), thinking critically, and reviewing one's work/proofreading.
As a multi-published author and professional editor as well as a retired university English professor, I have lots of experience writing and teaching others how to write effectively. I hope I'll have the opportunity to help you. For more on my background, please see my WyzAnt profile. Thanks. Reynold F.
