My love of languages stems from my passion for studying other cultures. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with others. I have lived and worked overseas (Europe and Asia) a large portion of my adult life, both while serving in the military and as an international business consultant.

My language education has been through the Defense Language Institute (in the US and in Europe), the National Cryptologic School, and through living in country.

I have a background in the military, law enforcement, and IT Project Management. While in the military, I worked as a Russian linguist and as a Russian instructor. As such, I take a real world approach to studying languages - how to use the language, studying its associated culture and history, and developing a passion for the language with the student.

I take this same approach to other topics I teach - learning and practical application.

I hold myself and my students to high standards, doing what it takes to make sure the student is able to grasp the concepts presented. I work hard for the student and expect the same.

I try to make sure the student is in a comfortable environment that is conducive to learned. To that end, I am happy to tutor in the students home or a location of their choosing. I am also happy to have parents present during the session, if they so chose.

I understand that sometimes "life happens", but I do require advance notice for cancellations, versus having no-shows.

I look forward to hearing from potential students and answering any additional questions!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I graduated from the Baltimore Police Academy in 1995 and was second in my class of 40 students.
I was assigned to the Western District - one of the highest crime districts in the united States at that time - and I worked as a Police Officer in Patrol from 1995 to 1997.
I worked as a Detective in Internal Investigations in 1998.
I conducted investigations into misdemeanor and felony crimes, wrote incident reports, interrogated suspects, effected arrests, wrote charging documents, processed evidence, and testified in court cases.

Handwriting

As part of my teaching experience for Russian, I include exercises and drills in penmanship, as cursive Cyrillic is very unforgiving - one loop or upstroke in the wrong place and the word is unintelligible.

These drills in proper letter formation and grouping carry over to cursive English characters as well.

I also have calligraphy as a hobby.

Public Speaking

I have over 4,000 hours of platform time as a Military Instructor, teaching in both English and Russian.
I have over 15 years experience as a Management and IT Consultant, requiring public speaking and presentation skills, presenting to Executives for major corporations.
I regularly public lectures on various topics for non-profit charitable organizations to audiences ranging from 10 to 50 people.

Russian

I attended the Basic and Intermediate Russian courses at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA.
I graduated with Honors from the Intermediate course and was also awarded the Pushkin Book Award for Excellence.
I attended the Foreign Language Training Center-Europe Russian courses in 1984 and in 1988 in Munich, Germany, graduating with Honors on both occasions.
I attended courses in Advanced Russian and Russian Linguistics at the National Cryptologic School at Ft. Meade, MD.
I am a Certified Russian Technical Instructor for both the US Army and US Air Force.
I served 12 years as a Russian Linguist in the US Army.
I worked and lived in Moscow for 6 months.
I have a BS, Russian from Excelsior College.
