Hello, my name is Sandrena, although many people call me Sandy. I am a seasoned commercial real estate professional who believes in providing a level of social stewardship in my personal life that helps children to succeed academically. I have been a tutor for the past three years. I enjoy improving the lives of children by providing a non-threatening approach to learning that is also nurturing, patient and creative.
There are many successful techniques that are used to assist children with improving their academic skills. The one technique that has been most successful for me is being an active listener. I want my student to know that I am actively listening, I care about how they process information, and I expect them to participate. If my student struggles for longer than 10 seconds, this may indicate that I need to improve my communications in order to make sure he/she understands what is being asked. A simple way to determine this is to gently, in a non-threatening manner, ask him/her to restate what he/she heard. I also often like to work without pencils. This technique has proven to be effective for younger students because it allows them to demonstrate their creative thinking abilities.
As part of my reading and comprehension tutorial processes, I utilize techniques like probing, clarifying, challenging, refocusing and prompting to help my students understand their assignments. This encourages my student to think more broadly. As a follow up, I always request a restatement of what we discussed to make sure my student has a healthy comprehension of the subject matter. We also do a lot of free writing. This allows me to check for grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors, and to access how effectively he/she can articulate his/her ideas.
With respect to developing good math skills, another tutorial technique that I have found to be highly effective with developing good problem solving skills has been achieved through modeling. This technique enhances their analytical and decision making abilities. However, modeling can also be slightly intimidating, particularly when a student does not possess good basic mathematical skills. Therefore, I am careful to recognize when my student becomes stuck, which can lead to frustration. I find playing certain games with mathematical overtones and concepts can lessen the pain of learning math. More importantly, I always provide positive encouragement and coaching, which has proven to cause my student to be less likely of the mindset to just give up.
I have unyielding commitment for building and maintaining trusted relationships with students that I have had the pleasure of tutoring, so that they can experience learning in a manner that helps them to improve their self-esteem and desire to learn. I utilize highly effective and productive tutoring techniques that are devised in such a way that I can deliver results based on positive role modeling and patience. Thus, creating an opportunity for a student to practice what they are learning in a sensitive controlled environment that also allows for reflection and discussion.
Basically, my desire is to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to achieve academic success and to have fun while learning. The students that I have tutored are demonstrating distinguished performance in their academic pursuits. I sincerely hope that you will consider me as a candidate worthy of the opportunity to handle your student's tutorial needs. I look forward to hearing from you.
