19 Years as a Tutor!
I am and have been a commercial pilot, certificated flight instructor, certified accountant, and tutor to university, high school and junior high students (including several years tutoring the University of Wyoming football team!).
It IS possible to learn to love calculus, physics, Shakespeare and business law - and sometimes all at the same time!
Are you a university, community college, high school or junior high student (or the parent or friend of one) who is struggling with science, math, English (including grammar and literature), or business subjects like accounting or economics? Are you trying to prep for the ACT, the PSAT, the SAT or other exams? Do you want to shore up your computer skills (such as Excel or Word)?
And do you want to have fun and feel academically successful at the same time?
I have taught flying (including aerodynamics, weather, and systems) for over 19 years; I have been a certified accountant for over 20 (I'm not ancient - I did both simultaneously), teaching business subjects to high school and community college students; and I was a University of Wyoming professional tutor to the football and basketball teams for several years.
I, too, struggled with calculus and physics in high school until I was taught the "Art of the Possible" by a bright and caring female professor; this training carried me through two degrees and a successful career as a commercial pilot and flight instructor. I have tutored students who previously "hated math and science," turning them into students many of whom changed their majors to study math and science, and many of whom also went on to have successful business or aviation careers. ESPECIALLY WOMEN! (Although the UW Athletics Department will tell you that the guys love my tutoring style as well!).
You CAN be great in subjects you're struggling with now, and I can show you how - it's fun to do well in subjects you once thought too difficult to master.
I'm fun, compassionate, and effective!
- College students (grad and undergrad), including Grad School Personal Statement prep
- Foreign students (TOEFL)
- Military exam prep (ASVAB)
- High School students
- Junior High/Middle School students
- Elementary students, 4th - 6th grade
(PLEASE NOTE: For younger students desiring math tutoring, it is imperative that the student have an easy command of multiplication tables after the 4th grade. If the student is struggling with multiplying, then all functions after that (including division, fractions, percentages, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, etc) will be dramatically impeded. If the student is stuggling with multiplying I will work with parents/guardians to enable them to work with their student via games and math table constructs. DAILY gentle & loving but insistent hands-on guidance from the family is imperative in memorizing "times tables.")
I have been a student of Bible Studies and Biblical literature for over 30 years. I am certified as a Catechist (teacher) and Master Catechist in the Catholic Dioceses of Salt Lake City (Utah), (Cheyenne) Wyoming, (Great Falls) Montana, (Sioux Falls) South Dakota, and the Archdiocese of KC, Kansas. I have been a teacher of Bible Studies and Theology at St. Labre Indian School, at the Utah State Penitentiary, and in 17 different parishes, including cathedral parishes in five states.
I also studied Bible Studies and Theology extensively as an Oblate of the Order of St Benedict (Benedictines), and remain active as both a tutor, a classroom instructor, an oblate, AND a student. I have studied Greek and Latin and as a result can read the OT in original Greek.
As a CPA I have been using QB for over 18 years, including QB Pro, Premier, and Enterprise (including the Construction version). As an accountant my responsibilities have also included training bookkeepers and business owners how to use their particular version, and also advising companies on which version to purchase from Intuit.
I have a BS and MS in Accounting as well as a CMA (Certified Managerial Accountant).
My teaching style is to first assess how comfortable the QB user is in general computer use. If the student is relatively comfortable with computers, then I sit with them as they use the downloadable tutorial online.
If they have dabbled with QB at all, I will back up and find out what they have problems with - reports? Cost accounting? Printing checks? Balancing checkbooks?
The trick to being a good QB tutor is to make sure they are really looking for a tutor and not for a cheap bookkeeper.
The Best Person that's ever happened to me. — When I first met Jennifer my initial thought was that she is a wonderful person, every lesson has been wonderful and motivating for me. Jennifer is very understanding and patient, she explains her views on math perfectly and always make sure she asks if I understand, and if not she never has any problem going over it again and again until I feel comfortable enough to move on. She is very caring an ...
