I am a certified teacher in Mass with 25+ years of experience. I have worked with learning disabled using Orton-Gillingham phonics/reading program. I teach the phonemes (sounds) associated with the graphemes (letters) to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Since it focuses on the spoken and written units within words, phonics is a approach and, as a result, is often contrasted with whole language, a word-level-up philosophy for teaching reading. I use dolch word list drills to teach the sight words.
I have worked for 25+ years with students in the public schools. I am certified in the state of Mass. I teach my students to tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information, effective reading and concentration techniques, as well as efficient notetaking.
