My name is Tom and I have been teaching for 15 years. I hold an M.A. in Education - Curriculum and Instruction and an M.A. in History, both from the University of Colorado. I have taught all social studies subjects but specialize in A.P. U.S. Government and Politics, A.P.Comparative Government, and A.P. U.S. History.
I have tutored for 4 years and really believe in a system of helping students learn how to learn. Too often this is neglected by teachers or tutors in the early stages of work. By working on a system of learning and making sure students know a system of learning, then the subject material is much easier to learn.
The subject matter has to connect to previous knowledge which means talking to the student and making information relatable and usable. I work with association of information quite a bit so that students can add to what they already know. I do not believe in rote memorization and feel that style only touches the surface of knowledge and ultimately leaves the student with little real knowledge.
