The subject of business covers a wide range. Having a degree in business administration, and an MBA, I am certain that my degrees, coupled with my work experience and tutoring skills would help any student progress in their studies quickly.
Business includes, but is not limited to basic business operations and administration. However, often the focus of business is identifying how the product/service is going to get into the hands of the consumer, the cost of running the business needs to be considered, how to identify and stimulate the target market, and more. Tutoring in this area would be based on the current curriculum that the student is studying.
Learning literature is more than reading a book, it is a way to make words come alive! Together, the student I will review material that is current or is a part of their curriculum and bring relevance to today. We will take a focused approach on not just understanding the content of the works read, but also asking the student to 'think beyond' what is being read. For instance, bring inference to what was read, testing the student's comprehension of the material, and examining the style of the writer. Together, the student and I will establish a set of goals we want to reach together as tutoring/teaching begins. Over time we will assess our progress to determine our level of success.
Marketing encompases an understanding of promotions, advertisements, buying decisions, break even analysis, sales forecasts, and much more. The student will be to get a deeper understanding of how their own decisions are affected by media. Whether the student needs to follow a set format or curriculum, he/she will benefit from lively discussions on marketing. With an MBA that has an emphasis in marketing, the student will benefit from not only understanding basic marketing, but also why certain marketing methods fails, even when they are successful in one country and why not in other countries. In the absence of a structured educational plan, or addition to one, the student will profit from understanding such terms as 'the happyness factor', 'demographics', 'swats' and more.
Microsoft Power Point is an excellent presentation software to learn, and easy also. The student will learn how to create a power point presentation, save and edit a file, insert and delete slides, add animation, select timing and timing methods, do music and narrative, and much more. We will also explore other ways to manipulate power point to be more creative such as adding logos, inserting text, pictures and using symbols. The final test for the student will be for him/her to create their own power point presentation within a set of guidelines given or if the student is learning because of a class, I will help him/her 'polish' the final presentation.
Almost no one these days can function without some use of Microsoft word software. Whether the student has to follow a specific curriculum or just needs to learn on her/his own, I can assist the student with getting the basics down. The student will explore creating, editing, and saving a file. Together we will create documents, learn how to insert pictures, photos, tables, links, undo typing, change fonts, use borders, and a lot more. Additionally, the student will benefit from learning how to remember and name files, create attractive documents, and even how to create a document and use a flash drive to edit or print on another computer. The student will be taught both beginning and intermediate word skills.
Proofreading is important for any employee, business owner, or student! Improperly spelled words and bad grammar reflects negatively on the author...and sometimes the company! We may not want to always admit it, but failure to proofread can mean disaster because our intelligence comes into question. The student will learn how to avoid common mistakes, do a grammar and spell check, and have some one else proofread as well. Together, the student and I will learn 'tricks' to finding writing flaws...a valuable skill.
Effective public speaking begins with confidence. A common cliche is 'it's not what you say, but how you say it' rings true when perfecting public speaking skills. As a former varsity debate participant, and having several years experience giving speeches for church and business events, I believe I can bring a unique perspective to this particular topic. Though public speaking is taught in school, the best forum is being in the audience. When people attend a seminar, see a politician, or attend a function when orators' take the podium, they either get inspired, or can't remember the speech--or the speaker. I can help the student by not just learning the components of excellent public speaking, but also helping them identify how to be 'more natural' depending on the audience, and how to be 'personal' to connect with the audience. I have used video techniques where the student can 'see' him/herself and critique or be critiqued over the beginning until the end of the tutoring/lesson periods. I can further help the student understand how posture and dress affect the 'hearing of their message'.
As a Business Consultant, I have used QuickBooks for years. Currently I have been using QuickBooks Pro 2011 to assist clients with all of their bookkeeping needs. Students will learn how to use the basics of QuickBooks as well as on-line tutoring. By using the tutorial, any materials the student has, and instruction, the student will find learning QuickBooks interesting and easy. I will teach the student how to go beyond the basics and master such functions as vendor descriptions (in detail), clearly reporting accounting categories, adequately describing entry items, which reports to generate and when, and much more. Together, the student and I will examine the end user function of QuickBooks as well, and determine which accounting department or executive would benefit from which financial report and why. The ideal student will not be afraid of numbers or making mistakes. Together, the student will learn to quiet his/her fears with numbers!
Helping a student read has to begin with the student already having a foundation of reading skills. Depending on the objective of the student or his/her class, we will review the best 'ways' to read. For instance, a college or business student may need to read a large amount of material quickly and can benefit from learning speed reading. Another student who can not seem to grasp what is read, will benefit from learning how to improve reading comprehension. And yet, another student may benefit from learning how to understand story settings, plots, or conflicts. Reading may also include oral exercises and regular quizzes.
I have been certified to do tax preparation since 1989. As a Business Consultant for a financial company, I am considered an expert in the tax preparation field. Being a tax preparer, our company actually performs tax consulting. What that means for the individual or the small business owner is that they can be confident that we prepare the tax return accurately, but also are qualified to give quality feedback. The student will learn the basics of tax preparation, but will also have the opportunity to go beyond learning tax laws. The truly stellar student will learn how to complete the simplest returns, but also get a start on the complex returns. That means he/she will get an understanding of tax forms, what the expectations of the IRS is when a client is under reveiw or audit, how to get questions answered directly from IRS, how to report rental property, 1098, 1099, deductible expenses, how to report a casualty/loss, and much more. We can follow the student's curriculum or we can provide one. I will teach the student how not to depend on 'last year's information' for 'this year's tax season'! The student might even get a recommendation for a career opportunity!
