My philosophy is to bring a team-oriented approach to learning. To the greatest extent practical, not only the student, but parents and teacher will be involved in the process. I operate tutoring sessions like a business with emphasis on communication, expectations, and results.
Most of my tutoring experience comes from assisting co-workers through degreed programs. I have also developed several mentoring programs with previous employers in which tutoring and coaching were emphasized. I have a keen interest in seeing people at all levels of an organization advance through continuing education.
With more than 25 years experience as a business and finance leader, I have a complete understanding of the processes and cycles that meld together business, accounting, and finance disciplines. Whether your tutorial needs are broad or very specific, I will work to help the student understand how it all fits together.
My business career has spanned nearly 30 years mostly in media and advertising; supporting sales and operations in broadcast, cable, print, and video production. For 16 of those years I have been in positions of Director-level or above.
My background and training are in accounting and finance so I always approach management decisions from that base. I am highly experienced in creating and analyzing the business cycle that starts with planning and budgeting, proceeds through forecasting and ends with actual results. Compliance and auditing are also strong points.
I also have substantial experience in the HR and Admin fields. This exposure has helped to modify my approach to making decisions that benefit the entire organization.
A student looking to me for help with a business related course will find that I can provide them with solid knowledge that is results-oriented.
In nearly 30 years of business experience, I have seen thousands of resumes and hired hundreds of positions. I can help students with this experience in crafting unique resumes and focus on what hiring employers really read and look for.
Recently, I also created for an employer, a Mentoring program that matched up and coming talent with appropriate veteran mentors. This program, involving about 30 employees, resulted directly in the promotion of four individuals and the retention of two others.
During that time I also created a "Bench Strength" program for that employer which identified candidates, internal and external, for future employment and promotion. The program used a series of employer "preferences" that were placed in a data base and routinely matched against prospects.
I have a progressive approach to helping employer and employee identify and develop their talent.
I am currently a WyzAnt certified tutor in Economics. My Econometrics experiences comes from over 28 years in business and financial management. Over the past five years, I worked with a team that developed a data warehouse for a large electronic media employer. We used the warehouse to enhance business intelligence, create numerous metrics and field ad hoc data requests from field managers. Many of the metrics were instrumental in generating incremental revenue; i.e churn of customers, seasonal trends, product trending and classification. We also used the warehouse for almost infinite looks at financial and operational data. The data was also used to create dashboards and scorecards to further performance monitoring.
In recent years I have helped numerous students prepare for and pass the Series 7 SEC Exam. My approach to preparation is not just to "pass the exam" but to help the student understand the concepts for the long term. I use a mixture of study guides and mock questions to prepare and also cover formulas and definitions. The student is also encouraged to sharpen long division and multiplication skills as calculators are not allowed.
As stated in my Public Profile, I bring a Business-minded approach to tutoring in general and to Study Skills specifically. This approach includes a highly organized, detailed process to ascertain the needs/goals of the student and plan for the execution of the goals accordingly. Parents and instructors are also included in the process as needed. Expectations of the student and the tutor will be clear throughout the process.
As an individual I am a patient and calm person who will create a positive yet structured environment within which to resolve past study problems and enhance future study habits.
By way of background, I have tutored students in study skills ranging from 5th grade to professional. I currently have a CPA exam candidate that I am tutoring using complicated texts, practice problems and interaction with his daily work. With other recent study skill student I have used an array of on-line resources and have even gone as far as to have met with student and teacher to better outline goals and what defines success.
Good study skills are like any other habit. I try to find a habit or trait that is positive in the student (maybe they are good at basketball) and then link that and study together. Once they see how they excel at one thing they can see how to succeed with sound study.
I have a B.S. in Accounting and at one time practiced as a CPA for three years. That experience was with a Big 8 firm. While there I had tax prep clients in manufacturing, banking and broadcast industries. These clients had complicated returns with issues such as inventory adjustments, intangible asset amortization, and cost-to-market valuations.
I have extensive experience in preparing individual, corporation, partnership, and non-profit returns. Many of my individual clients over the years have had fairly complex returns including AMT issues, rental or lease income, stock sales, etc. Despite the advent of Turbo Tax, etc., I still have clients whom I help with guidance.
Since my CPA days, most of my corporation/partnership experience is with small business (1120A or 1065) returns. I have also participated in several successful client audits focusing on validating business expenses.
I also currently have several non-profit clients who I help to file 990 returns and also help with compliance issues.
