After finishing up engineering school I worked for five years in the mining industry and then five years in the medical device industry. Now, I do the book keeping for my husband's engineering company and I home school our two boys. I occasionally substitute for teachers at the private school my boys attend (Family Academy of Christian Education - this is a school that meets once a week to provide home school kids a chance to take courses in a classroom setting). While math and science are my forte, by teaching my boys, I have learned to appreciate, and love, language, writing, reading, and history too. By starting "at square one" with my own kids, I can empathize with the fact that kids need to be taught the basics with love and understanding.
I obtained a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University. I worked five years as a process engineer in the mining industry and five years as an R&D engineer in the medical device industry. I hold a current professional engineering license in Chemical Engineering from the state of Colorado.
I currently home school my two boys and have taught both of them to read and write. I've established an effective program to teach them math, handwriting, language, history, geography, and science. I also occasionally serve as a substitute teacher at the private school they attend once a week; I've taught the grades K-1 and grades 2-6 gym classes and the K-2 geography class.
I taught of my boys how to read using phonics methods. I primarily used alphabet flash cards, various physical phonics games, Explode the Code, Workbooks, and Bob Books. I typically do 10-15 minutes of phonics "drill", 10-15 minutes of physical phonics games, and then 10-15 minutes of level appropriate reading in my phonics sessions.
I took piano lessons throughout my childhood, participated in various guild competitions, and was the jazz choir piano accompanist in high school. I still enjoy playing and play daily (in hopes of inspiring my boys to take it up!). I am comfortable with being able to teach student through about the year four/five level.
I manage the books for my husband's structural engineering company using Quick Books. I've used this software for over eight years, under the supervision of our tax accountant.
No subject too big or too small! — Beth was SOOOO helpful! She helped me with a very difficult fluid dynamics topic for chemical engineering! She was able to help me understand the FUNDAMENTALS as well as reason me through the DIFFICULT concepts. She was also compassionate and understanding!!! I plan on staying with her through my course and probably through my entire education! ...
