Algebra 1
I have tutored middle and high school students in algebra for over ten years, and I love helping students become confident and successful math learners. I currently teach an honors algebra 1 course to 7th and 8th graders. For those of you who are familiar with high school math classes called Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, and Math 4, I tutor those as well.
Algebra 2
I've helped students learn Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra for over 10 years. I love teaching algebra and getting my students excited about math- I feel so proud when they smile and say, "I didn't know algebra could be this easy!" For some high school students, they learn algebra 2, geometry, and some trig in Math 3. For those of you who are familiar with high school math classes called Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, and Math 4, I tutor those as well.
American History
I think I inherited my love of American History from my grandfather, Guy, who served in WWII and grew up during the Great Depression. He was passionate about learning everything about WWI, the American Civil War, and the American Revolutionary War (he was quite the war buff). I've developed a bit of a "history hobby" and relish every opportunity to learn more about this subject with my students. :)
Vocabulary
Developing a strong vocabulary eases reading comprehension analysis. Typically, students who have not yet developed a strong vocabulary struggle with reading and reading comprehension. When tutoring my students, I always incorporate vocabulary building when teaching reading comprehension analysis.
Grammar
I taught an English course at Metro for six semesters, and I have over 10 years of English/grammar tutoring experience.
Geometry
I have been tutoring students in algebra and geometry for over ten years and currently teach a high school geometry course to middle school G/T students. I've found that a successful geometry student has solid algebra 1 skills, so if I tutor a student who struggles with geometry, I'll also help this student strengthen his or her algebra skills.
Prealgebra
I have over ten years of experience tutoring pre-algebra and algebra to middle and high school students and college students. I've taught math at Metropolitan State University of Denver as an Adjunct Faculty member (I helped students prepare for the elementary and college level math Accuplacer exam), and I love helping students become confident and successful math learners. I currently teach a 7th grade pre-algebra class.
Precalculus
Precalculus, otherwise known as Math 4, can be very challenging for students. Personally, I find this course exciting and look forward to helping my students understand the content. For those of you who are familiar with high school math classes called Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, and Math 4, I tutor students in all four of these courses.
Reading
Many students struggle with reading comprehension concepts like analyzing the author's purpose, finding a main idea or central theme, or making reasonable conclusions based on paragraph/story evidence. I find that 1:1 tutoring allows these struggling students to freely vent their frustrations and ask questions they may never ask in class, for fear of publicizing their self-doubt and confusion to their teacher and classmates. When students feel comfortable with their tutor, they develop a sense...

Trigonometry
Trig can be quite a task for a lot of students and I found the best way to tackle the content is to memorize identities and solve practice problems. Knowing how to start can make a seemingly complicated problem appear easy. :)
Writing
Teaching students the art of writing has been a passion of mine since I was in high school; my first job as a tutor was as a writing tutor when I was only 14 years old. I created a writing "club" to provide English and writing assistance to student athletes needing to maintain academic eligibility. In college, I continued tutoring student athletes and spent most of my time teaching writing and grammar to the football players. Since earning my B.S. in 1997, I've tutored hundreds of students in...

English
I've taught English Composition at Metropolitan State University of Denver as an Adjunct Faculty member.
SAT Math
I have tutored SAT math for almost 10 years. I know the SAT is changing next year (2015) and I've started researching and practicing new strategies for the new test in order to best prepare my students. I'm excited for the changes and I think students will feel more confident with the content and structure of this exam.
Literature
I enjoy watching students develop a love of reading and finding real-world lessons in literature. Watching students emotionally connect with popular literary characters makes me smile!
GED
I have 10+ years of GED tutoring experience.
SAT Reading
As a native Marylander, I am quite familiar with the SAT exam. I began helping students prepare for this exam in 2001 and have, personally, scored a perfect 800 in both the math and writing portions of the exam (my highest critical reading score is a 750, which is a 98 percentile rank). Most students struggle with the vocabulary questions found in the critical reading sections of the exam, so helping students build a stronger vocabulary is an integral part of my SAT teaching strategy. I use practice...

Physical Science
I taught a night general science class (physical science) at Metropolitan State University of Denver. I have a B.S. Degree in Nutrition Science and have taught/tutored science for well over 10 years. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade physical science and life science.
ASVAB
I've helped high school students study for the ASVAB and I've taught veterans general math, science, English and reading comprehension at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
PSAT
I have almost 10 years of experience preparing students to take the PSAT.
SSAT
The SSAT is a test students take in order to enroll in a private school. Not all private schools administer this test, so it's in your best interest to find out which entrance exam your private school requires. I've helped students study for all three SSAT exams- elementary, middle, and upper.
Spelling
Spelling can be tricky for many students, and if kids learn, apply, and practice spelling rules then they can master this skill.
ACT English
I've been tutoring students to prepare for the ACT for about 6 years, and the English section is one of my favorite sections to teach.
ACT Math
Helping high school students prepare for the ACT math section is one of my specialties. My personal ACT math score range is 34-36. I am an ACT math EXPERT. I have a number of ACT practice tests (including tests which were formally given to all high school students), and I use these tests to help my students not only learn and review the content, but also to feel more comfortable and confident with this exam. I review every incorrect answer and explain to my students why their answers are incorrect...

ACT Science
I tutor all 4 sections of the ACT exam: English, Math, Reading, and Science. I have a number of ACT practice tests (including tests which were formally given to all high school students), and I use these tests to help my students not only learn and review the content, but also to feel more comfortable and confident with this exam. I review every incorrect answer and explain to my students why their answers are incorrect and how to determine the correct answers.
Elementary Math
I have tutored math for over ten years, and I love helping students develop the confidence and the skills necessary to become successful math learners. Although I hold a secondary math license (grades 7-12), I'm familiar with the elementary math common core methodology and practice. I can even help parents understand this "new way of doing math" as well.
Elementary Science
I teach middle school physical science and life science and I've taught general science at both the high school and college levels. I love teaching and inspiring students to develop a passion for all things science!
Study Skills
I have 10+ years of experience helping students learn how to study and how to develop effective study strategies. When I taught high school, I developed a study skills guide for students struggling with math and science; I used this guide to teach students how to use memory techniques to remember math and science equations and memorize complex biological systems typically taught in a Biology or Physical Science class. I also helped students outline historical events, famous historical figures,...

ISEE
The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a standards-based assessment that many private and independent schools use to determine enrollment via achievement ranking and academic skill evaluation. I have over 5 years experience preparing students to take this exam.
Praxis
I have taken and passed the Praxis 1 exam and scored in the top 10 percentile in all three tested subject areas (I received a perfect score on the Praxis 1 essay). I've also tutored for the Praxis II Elementary Education Content Exam (5014) and have study materials for this exam.
Nutrition
I hold a B.S. Degree in Nutrition Science and I have taught high school Nutrition Science, Applied Nutrition, and Nutrition Biochemistry.
