As a Master's level graduate, I've undertaken community health care research as a sociologist. I've substituted as a 7th and 8th grade English and math teacher, and taught drums over the years. Several health research articles have been published in a professional research journal, co-authored by my mentor and myself. I've helped my granddaughter pass a tough, but interesting, on-line American Literature course, just in time to help her graduate from high school.
I've learned to enjoy college level literature classes, and have taken math successfully up through Differential Equations, though I feel more comfortable teaching math at the secondary( 7th through 12th grade) level.
My approach to teaching is to help the student find ways to their own understanding, to impart a love of and enthusiasm for the subject at hand, and to positively reinforce the student's successes in an encouraging way. Together,we constantly look for ways in "how" what the student is learning can be applied to everyday life.
We focus on what is required to pass and master the topics in the student's textbook, such as solving basic equations, factoring and finding the value of unknowns.
Algebra 2 covers factoring, rational exponents, quadratic equations, functions, imaginary and complex numbers, and exponential and logarithmic functions and equations. We would always endeavor to tie into the world around us, the subject matter in Algebra 2.
Basic reading and understanding of the Old and New Testaments, as well as Christ's fulfilled promises, as originally posited in the Old Testament of The Bible for the coming Messiah.
I've been involved in Bible studies, Sunday school and small-group studies, daily Bible readings and occasional Bible-study weekends, since becoming a Christian in 1986.
The student and I work together to better understand the grammar and structure of the English language, with the goal of better understanding written and spoken English; and to better express oneself in both written and spoken English.
We will work off of any textual material in the student's class at school, as well as material that both interests the student, and that the student has to confront in everyday life.
The overall goal will be to attain a better mastery of, appreciation of, and even a joy of using the English language in our daily lives.
The student and I would work through those subjects and topics required for the student to attain enough of a mastery of the mathematics of figures and shapes, to allow the student to pass their geometry final. We would concurrently attempt to gain more of an appreciation of and understanding of the application of geometry in everyday life.
The student and I will strive to comprehend and appreciate both popular and classical literature, including, unveiling lessons learned from these written works and applying them to the student's life.
We will cover the essential mathematical concepts needed to advance into Algebra, such as: factors, variables, rational numbers, and beginning equations. The student and I will focus on those Prealgebra concepts that the student is having a particularly hard time in grasping. We'll strive to see how all of these concepts will fit into the student's quest to eventually master Algebra.
The thrust of the tutoring sessions will focus on getting the student to experience more of a joy of and a proficiency in reading, by starting them off with written material that they're interested in. We will work together toward attaining more of an appreciation of and comprehension of written material that is required by the schools, that is needed to function in everyday society, and that is of a more sophisticated and difficult level of comprehension.
In Trigonometry, we would cover the topics of the trig functions of sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant and cosecant; the Pythagorean theorem, equations involving trig functions, and The Laws of Sines and Cosines. We would endeavor to apply what we're learning in Trigonometry to the world around us.
The student and I will endeavor to have the student attain a greater facility in writing in the English language; including, the proper usage of words, grammar, spelling and the construction of sentences and paragraphs. Ultimately, we'll strive to have the student to be able to write knowledgeably, appropriately and effectively for everyday practical life and for communicating one's thoughts and feelings.
