I've had three years of training in developmentally appropriate strategies and assessments to teach elementary math. I would learn your child's areas of strength and weaknesses and adjust the learning activities accordingly for fast academic growth.
I have taught Englsh Language Learners for many years, and have a unique patience and skill in understanding learners' needs. My Master's Degree and CLD endorsement qualify me to teach in many areas. I have excellent grammar, basic spelling, and writing skills. I could help you with language skills so that those little grammatical errors that trip you up might be solved. I am willing to work with beginning to advanced learners of English in reading, writing, and conversational English.
As a native English speaker and elementary teacher for 28 years, I have many ideas and resources to help students improve grammar in spoken and written English.
All of my 28 years of licensed teaching experience have been in elementary school. Most of that time, I taught kindergarten or first grade, which of course emphasized phonics. I used a balanced approach to teaching literacy, but also taught with many reading programs (LLI, JERI, CHEERS, Reading Street, Mondo) during my career in Jeffco Public Schools. One program I have used is Fundations, which is the early literacy program of Wilson, an Orton-Gillingham approach. It is specifically geared toward struggling students, including dyslexic students. I would bring my vast successful experience, enthusiasm for teaching and appropriate resources (books, magnetic letters, games, etc.) to each reading lesson as a WyzAnt tutor.
As a former state officer and program manager in the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), I presented many lessons on public speaking. I also represented Colorado in a national speaking competition, and later used my speaking skills in my teaching career, volunteer organizations, and to assess others' skills. I am a graduate of a Toastmaster's beginning course as well.
Since most of my teaching experience has been in the elementary grades, I would be an expert in helping children with their reading and writing needs. I would collaborate with parents for additional tasks that might be worthwhile. All of the literacy skills are interrelated, so I would take an interest-based approach toward meeting many academic weaknesses based upon national core standards. I would assess reading and writing abilities, then guide our lessons toward those skills within whatever big ideas matter most.
As a former intermediate level classroom teacher, I taught many study skills. Often, skills such as scanning, organizing information, and higher level thinking are obstacles to advancing to grade-level standards.
