Metropolitan State College of Denver
University of Northern Colorado (Master's)
I received my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education from Metropolitan State College, and later received my Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado. I taught both elementary education and special education for 17 years before I became a stay-at-home mom to my three beautiful children. During my years as a teacher, I spent most of my time as a resource teacher, helping students who had difficulties in math, reading, and writing. Many of my students were diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, physical disabilities, and behavior difficulties.
Since then I've tutored students who needed help in language arts and math. I enjoy watching my students gain skills and confidence in areas that give them frustration. I feel that every child should feel valued and capable of making progress. I will work with your child's strengths and interests to help them achieve the skills they need. I use a reward system for students who have a difficult time staying on task, as well as many hands-on activities to keep their interest.
I can tutor after school or on weekends. I am also available to work with children who are home-schooled during the weekday mornings. Our experiences with Therese and Wyzant were great. Our son struggled in fifth grade with math and writing and she quickly turned around his negative attitude towards homework, school and learning in general. My son willingly if not eagerly went to each session and he was happy when he left. Therese is flexible, good-natured and patient. She is solution oriented and has lots of experience with children. If there is ever a need for our son to get assistance again we will be calling her for help. She took what could have been a trying period in my sons life and helped him grow as a student and gain confidence for this new school year. By the end of our time I really felt she knew my son as a student and a person. She is a great choice and recommend her to anyone within shouting distance. Thank you Therese!
Although our son is shy he has responded very well to Therese. She has made learning fun again for him at a time when he was having difficulties with math and reading. We were very pleased to see his most recent test score in math much more in line with his potential. I believe this is based on the self confidence he is re-discovering while working with Therese.
Therese is wonderful and my daughter loves working with Therese. Very pleasant. My daughter has a better understanding of her math problems after working with Therese. She says she knows how to explain it in a way she can understand.
Therese is excellent with my son in her tutoring. We started just needing reading then changing to reading and math. Now we only need math and Therese has been flexible with each of the changes. She has a great way of getting my son to work when he says he doesn't want. I would highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received my certification to teach elementary school in 1987 and taught for 17 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. I taught language arts, math, reading, science, social studies, and study skills. During that time I taught in the regular classroom and in a resource room for students with special needs.
I enjoy teaching children, not only to read, but to love reading. I believe every student can be enticed to read through good literature, at their reading level, and fun games and activities that teach literacy skills. Reading well takes practice, but that practice can be enjoyable. My hope is to create life-long readers.
During my 17 years as a teacher, most of my experience was with students who had ADHD, behavior challenges, physical disabilities, and learning disabilities. I understand the unique challenges these students face and have used many different techniques to help individual student succeed at learning.
As a teacher and tutor, I've had quite a bit of experience teaching study skills to my students. It is beneficial for every student to know how to stay organized, stay on schedule and plan the steps to complete each assignment. Skills such as, scanning material before reading it completely and outlining ideas before writing, are important to know. I also enjoy giving students various techniques for learning the information and skills they need.
