Cooking
First and most importantly, I love to cook! I grew up in a large family. My mother was a homemaker, made everything from scratch and taught all of her 6 children to cook and enjoy doing it. Growing up I didn't even know that you could buy chocolate frosting in a can and to this day I've never owned a microwave and 5 out of 7 nights I prepare my meals from scratch as well. I grew up in the kitchen cutting, chopping, frying, heating, stirring or measuring, mixing, rolling, kneading and baking. My mother taught me the easiest and most efficient way of doing it all. She was also a professional cake decorator and I was her apprentice.
I have an eclectic palate and I love experimenting with aromatic herb and spice combinations, savory, sweet and spicy marinades, sauces, dressings, creating new recipes and improving on old family favorites by reducing the fat and sugar without sacrificing flavor. On my travels to Europe, the Middle East and Mexico I have learned many new and interesting techniques and traditional dishes that I have incorporated into my culinary repertoire. At the moment I am also writing a cookbook. It requires extensive research, creativity and organization and I am very excited about the process and all that I am going to learn on this literary culinary journey.
Finally, I started teaching personal cooking / baking classes several months ago while living in Mexico and loved it! I am excited about continuing to spread my passion, enthusiasm and culinary skills to anyone that has the desire and eagerness to learn.
Food brings people together. It feeds our hearts and nurtures our spirits.
Food is life. Let's learn about "life" together.
ESL/ESOL
My first experience teaching English was in Mexico where I taught for over 5 1/2 years, from 2005 - 2010. I taught in private K-12 schools and language institutes, young children and business professionals, basic and advanced levels. It was a humbling and simply amazing life experience!
For the last 2 years I have been tutoring immigrant and refugee students in writing, grammar, reading, pronunciation in the ESL tutoring center at the Community College of Denver. I hope to continue helping and inspiring eager and willing students in English, ESL, grammar, vocabulary, literature for years to come.
Geography
I have loved maps since I was a young girl. I think what I love most about them is imagining all of the incredible places that I could visit, the unique cultures I could experience, and fascinating natural and historical sites that I could explore! I am confident that my passion for the physical / political world will be infectious and you will gain at the very least a new appreciation for our planet and its inhabitants.
Let's go on an adventure together!
Grammar
I am a GRAMMAR GEEK! I love teaching grammar! It may seem crazy, but it's true. You may not fall in love with grammar, but my goal is that with my simple explanations and enthusiasm you will at least become friends with it.
Study Skills
I incorporate study skills tips and strategies into all of my tutoring sessions. Strategies can include helping the student prioritize their time, organize their binders and notebooks, creating flashcards, watching short educational videos on the topic being studied, simple and effective ways to research topics, organize information/resources for essays and projects and much more.
Writing
The writing process can be a painful one. It can be difficult to even know where to start. I am very, very confident that together we can work through all of your frustration, confusion and fear about writing. I truly believe that anyone can write if given the right tools and encouragement. It is also important to understand that writing like any other learn skill, requires time, practice and commitment.
