As a student in college, I've experienced and understood the difficulties of balancing hectic schedules - school, extracurricular activities, and everything in between. Each student has a unique method of learning that teachers may not be able to accommodate to in a classroom setting. I realized that I want to help those students who struggle for whatever reason, and luckily, found myself a part-time job tutoring students at the Mathnasium. It started out as just an opportunity at a first job, but I later discovered how much I love to teach, and have been happily working there for over a year.
I've worked with Kindergarten to high school students ranging in subjects from elementary math to Pre-calculus/Trigonometry, plus occasional help with other subjects such as Chemistry and English. I specialize in all types of math up to the high school level, as well as Grammar, proofreading, English, Reading, SAT Math, and SAT Writing. As an experienced tutor, I often try to challenge my students without overwhelming them, and sincerely hope they excel.
I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy; however, I am very lenient and do not mind rescheduling. Sessions can be held anywhere that's convenient for the student as long as it is within a reasonable distance.
I will genuinely try my best to help you exceed in your studies and hope to hear from you soon!
I have tutored many Algebra 1 students in private and group sessions, and my goal is to give students a strong foundation in this subject as a stepping stone to excel in higher level math. This is a crucial subject to exceed in, as it teaches concepts that are constantly used in other levels. I've experienced tutoring students in Algebra 2 and above, who were not properly taught Algebra 1, and therefore struggle in these higher level classes. I hope to prevent this by making sure my students have no trouble with these concepts.
I successfully took Algebra 2 Honors at Troy High School as well as tutor it privately and in group sessions. This class is often taught at a quick pace with so many areas to cover such as factoring, graphing, imaginary and complex numbers, etc. so I hope to thoroughly cover each topic and make sure the student understands them before moving on to a new one.
I've been tutoring at Mathnasium for over a year and tutor groups of elementary students. Thanks to this job I've seen the importance of a mastery of these basic concepts, and learned several different styles of teaching them to tend to the way each student thinks.
I took a year of Geometry Honors at Troy High School as well as tutor group and private sessions. Most students have not been previously exposed to the foreign concepts of Geometry, as they do not deal with only equations and simple math problems, but test the students' ability to analyze a problem and interpret what should be used to solve it. I try to help students master each of the theorems they are taught so they can easily find the connection between a problem and its related theorems.
I've taken several English classes in high school and college, as well as wrote for a newspaper in St. Jude's Youth Leadership Team. I understand the importance of proper grammar and will try to break down each of the complexities unique to the English language.
I tutor elementary to high school students in math, and noticed that Pre-algebra is often where students begin to struggle. Because it is not simply fractions or addition problems, many are afraid of math that involves letter variables and unknowns. However, it is these topics that will build a necessary foundation for higher level maths, and I can cover all of its material to ensure that a student is ready to move on.
I took a year of pre-calculus in high school as well as tutor at Mathnasium. I can prepare a student with special techniques to memorizing the unit circle and trigonometry functions and properties. I have privately tutored several pre-calculus students, and warn that pre-calculus (along with trigonometry) builds on itself after each successive chapter. Therefore, a student must be willing to put in the time to catch up if needed. I can help pinpoint the areas that the student needs to learn and prepare homework/quizzes if the student needs further practice.
I've been a math tutor for over a year and often prepare students in SAT math. This is a very tricky test as it often predicts and includes some of the false answers that many students might choose, and I've tried to teach my students ways to avoid such common answers. I can provide extra work if needed after assessing which areas the student needs help with.
After tutoring many students in Precalculus/Trigonometry, I've noticed that most of them believe it is just memorization and therefore fail to understand the concept. I've helped them understand what they're actually doing when they solve Trigonometry problems so that they are able to solve them on their own later on. (see Pre-calculus section)
