It is very important that you start helping your kids from the beginning of the school year. Please do not wait until they go to the “unrecoverable grade area”, and contact me or any other tutor who you feel could be helpful to get required help for your kids. My goal is to help your kids get the highest grade by understanding the material and I am sure your goal is the same.
And here is the reason:
The most important reason students get frustrated with mathematics is because they do not know how to solve the problems and this comes from the lack of required skills. The fact is different mathematics subjects are all related to each other. If not impossible, it is hard to pass an algebra I without passing pre-algebra. For mathematics you need to learn skills step by step. However, for some other subjects such as history this is not true. You can start history from any point of time without a need to know too much about what happened before.
On the other hand, this is true about the school year too. It is very hard for students to recover mathematics courses after getting low grades in first couple of tests. There are two main reasons for that. The first reason is they lack the required skills to proceed to the next topic and this starts to frustrate them. The second reason is statistical, to get better average grade, they need to earn extremely high grades which seems impossible to them. For example, if a student gets 65 and 70 in first two exams, he/she needs to get 90 and 95 in next exams to get an average of 80. The fact is getting 90 and 95 in the next exams for a student who got 65 and 70 in first two exams is very hard, since the material gets harder and he/she do not have required skills from previous part.
And about myself:
Even though I am a Business-Economics student at the University of California-Irvine, my strongest subject is mathematics and I recently got my AA in mathematics. Also I awarded from mathematics department in Chaffey College and no wonder my mathematics cumulative GPA including 3 semester of Calculus is 4.0. I also used to work in the Chaffey College as a Supplemental Instruction Leader which helps students in algebra to get better grades, but I quit the position after I transferred to UC Irvine. I used to hold my own sessions 3 times a week and my average attendance was 15 students. As my badge tells I have 700+ hours of private tutoring just on WyzAnt and most of them are regular based students which we were started to work beginning of school year till final exam day.
My method is not just to sit with students and repeat what their teacher told them. I always walk with my students through the problems and I explain them wherever they get stuck. I will not proceed to the next topic until I get the feeling that he/she understands the current material.
