I am a seasoned educator and am looking for a very small, select group of students to work with this school year. If you are interested in more than just homework help, and want a tutor who will both mentor and challenge your student, then please contact me.

In addition to my 6 years of tutoring experience, I am a community college faculty instructor.
I have a Master's degree in geology from Arizona State University and Bachelor's degree in both biology and geology from the University of Western Ontario. My tutoring experience is very diversified, and includes science, math, test preparation, and English. My educational background has given me excellent language and grammar skills, as well as a strong foundation in math and science. I love being able to help a student understand a subject with which they have previously struggled. I have tutored students in most math and science courses, and I am comfortable with all grade levels, from elementary school to college.

My teaching style varies according to the individual needs of the student. My main goal is to help the student become enthusiastic about the specific subject or activity, and confident in their ability to interpret what a question is actually asking. I am very flexible, and will tailor the curriculum and evaluation methods based on discussions with the student. If desired by either the student and/or parent, I can provide additional practice resources to help strengthen concepts covered in our tutoring sessions. Whenever possible, I am available to my students via email, text, or Skype if they have a problem with their homework that I can guide them through.

I am open to group tutoring sessions, so feel free to ask! If you need last minute help for a test or exam I will do my best to accommodate you, however please be aware that I charge an increased rate for short-notice scheduling.

I think that tutoring can be a mutual rewarding experience, and I look forward to helping students excel!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Just like the SAT, the ACT is a test that requires a lot of preparation and students tend to be afraid of it. I'll go through each section with them and show them how to handle each type of problem so they are never faced with anything unexpected.

Biology

I've taken biology courses in a variety of different topics, ranging from environmental studies to genetics, with even my masters related to the field of geomicrobiology. I love helping students who are struggling understand the major concepts and being to develop an appreciation for the subject.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject that many students struggle with, and so I like to go back to the beginning and make sure the fundamentals are strong before progressing to more advanced material. I love showing students an easier way of viewing and doing a problem that they had previously had trouble with!

Geology

As my educational background shows, I have both a bachelors and a masters in geology. I am also currently teaching GLG 101 and GLG 103 at Mesa Community College. This is one of favorite subjects to tutor as the majority of students need help in the same course that I'm teaching.

Piano

I have been playing the piano since I was 4 years old, and I love this instrument. I was classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, and have passed my Grade 9 level examination. I have a very solid understanding of the musical theory associated with playing an instrument and I am able to incorporate that into my teaching. I have experience in teaching piano and I really enjoy being able to help students grow and learn to explore their musicality.

SAT Math

The SAT is a test that scares a lot of students, and for good reason! I break it down for my students on a section by section basis, and show them which areas to focus on for studying.
I make sure they are familiar with all types of problems and I also show them tricks for handling some of the more difficult problems.

Series 63

I have passed the Series 6 exam with an 88% and the Series 63 with an 87%. My experience with other test preparation tutoring will allow me to help others succeed on these tests, which have a reputation for being difficult.

I read an article today listing the 5 states with the greatest increases in college tuition. It stated that the average cost of tuition (plus the assorted battery of fees) for in-state students was $9,428 dollars last year (2011-2012). If you were an out-of-state student your bill would have topped $22,000. Note that this is simply the tuition cost - room and board will increase that figure... read more

I believe that students should have some time off from their studies in the summer, and get a little bit of time to 'recharge.' However, that time of year can also be very helpful for working on improving critical reading skills. Reading is a subject that tends to get pushed to the back of the priority list when studying these days, however it plays a big role - even in things like math and... read more

Great tutor! — My son has had many tutors over the years. This is the first time he came home reporting he has learned something... that says a lot to me! Jill obviously knows how to explain the material. She has been very prompt on communication and has gone out of her way to accommodate our tight schedule. ...
