Hi, my name is Lalita. I am an Ivy League university graduate, university lecturer, and professional tutor. With over a decade of tutoring and teaching experience to hundreds of students, I specialize in tailoring lessons to the individual needs of each student. I am kind, patient, encouraging, and truly care about the success of my students. Also, unlike most English Major professionals, I got an A in AP Calculus (while attending Cleveland Humanities Magnet HS), which gives me the unique ability to understand your Math (as well as English) coursework and explain it to you effectively.
I have worked for various SAT tutoring companies, read many SAT guide books, learned lots of tricks, and developed many new expert strategies of my own! Here are my scores: Writing-800/800 (99%-ile), Reading 770/800 (99%-ile), Math-700/800 (93%-ile). I can help you score higher on the Writing, Reading, and Math sections of the SAT! Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions and coaching from someone like me, who can explain how/why the SAT test-makers decide which answers are right or wrong.
I just focus on the areas in which you are struggling (or need review) and give you detailed, thorough explanations. Since you are my only student, I have the time to answer your individual questions, rather than having to move on to the next topic quickly. We can decide to skip over questions that are easy for you and focus on ones that are giving you problems.
MY PHILOSOPHY: INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION--as with all of my lessons, I continually adapt my instruction and materials to a student's particular needs, goals, and skill-set. I use my teaching experience and creative problem-solving abilities to tailor lessons to improve and reinforce students' weak spots. You won't find that in a mass-marketed, cookie-cutter class!
In addition to my experience as a professor, I also enjoy working with children--helping them understand and complete their homework assignments so that their parents can rest after a long day of work.
I earned my MA from Columbia University in English and Comparative Literature. Before that, I received my BA from UCLA with a major in American Literature and Culture and minors in Comparative Literature and Asian American Studies. I have experience as a college lecturer in the Asian American Studies and English Departments at Cal State University Northridge (CSUN). Finally, I have a passion for teaching/tutoring because it is a joy to help struggling students finally connect with what they are trying to learn.
In addition, I have also been a literacy tutor for the Los Angeles Public Library for over 2 years and I have been teaching ESL and Thai language for over 7 years.
I also see myself as a lifelong learner and love studying foreign languages, such as Thai (which I also teach), French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, German, and American Sign Language. I have certificates in: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from TEFL Paris; Le Cours de Langue et Civilisation Francaise de la Sorbonne from The University of Paris IV; and The Advanced Study of Thai (AST) from Chiang Mai University.
