CSUN (Socio-Cultural Anthropology)
CSULA, Los Angeles, CA (Master's)
I worked much of my adult life as an Information Technology specialist. I left this position six years ago to pursue a master in Sociocultural Anthropology and a master to teach English as a Second Language. During my career I taught Information Technology related courses in the evening and tutored children and young adults in subjects such as English, math and social sciences. I recently taught English as a Second Language at the Cambridge International Language School in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco, Mexico.
I have my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (cum laude) from California State University Northridge, where I received the excellent scholarly achievement award, Phi Kappa Phi, and was a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. I also have a Master of Arts in Anthropology (cum laude) from California State University Los Angeles. I am working on my thesis with a concentration in Sociocultural Anthropology.
My native language is Dutch/Flemish; however, I speak English at the same level. I am also very versed in the Spanish, French and German languages.
My goal in tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist them to the point at which they become an independent learner, and thus no longer need a tutor. I combine content knowledge with empathy, honesty and humor. A caring attitude is important to me. I am organized for the tutoring session and punctual. I also establish a learning relationship with the student and develop unique teaching strategies. I worked much of my adult life as an Information Technology specialist. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an IT professional for over 25 years. Outlook and MS Office apps are second nature to me. I have taught evening classes in all subject.
