ACT Math
The ACT Math test covers math generally learned by the end of 11th grade which includes Algebra 1&2, geometry, and trigonometry. I have taken courses up through 2 years of calculus in college and have used math included in the ACT Math test in my chemistry career and during carpentry repair jobs around my house including staircases on a herring bone pattern deck. I will try to make the memorization of formulas and step-wise procedures for solving the math problems on the test easier by using step lists, giving illustrations, and solving example problems.
ACT Science
Although the ACT science test covers many different science courses it does not need one's knowledge of a lots of facts. Instead the test is over the use of the scientific process. This process includes scientific reasoning, experimental design, use of math in science, understanding data presentation in graphical format, and understanding of scientific text. During my chemistry career I have used these processes as I have worked in industrial plants to solve production problems. I will try to help you to understand the process of solving a problem through the use of scientific principles that can be applied to all of the sciences and many of the scientific encounters of life.
Algebra 1
I have taken courses in math up through 2 years of calculus in college. I have used algebra in my over 25 years of work as a chemist.
Algebra 2
I have taken math courses up through 2 years of college calculus and have found algebra 2 to be useful as I took college level chemistry courses for my BS and MS degrees.
Chemistry
I started enjoying chemistry as a child as my father worked with me in our kitchen and related chemistry to cooking. Presently, I have a BS and MS degrees related to chemistry and have worked as a chemist for over 25 years in industry.
Elementary Math
Math is the relationship of numbers to each other to both solve problems and evaluate products. It is the language of everyday numerical problems from cooking to purchasing. I use math daily and feel that a good base in math is needed to make good life choices.
Elementary Science
I have been fascinated by science since I was little as I have tried to understand the world around me. I have taken many science courses at the college level including chemistry, geology, biology, physics, and astronomy and appreciate how interconnected they all are. I find science is helpful as I read the news as well when I experience my day-to-day life.
Geology
Geology is story that rocks, rivers, and sand tells us about the history of the earth. By understanding geology as I have through college level courses I can both appreciate what has happened to our Earth and what is in its and our future.
Geometry
Geometry is the study of angles and shapes and is useful to many trades including carpentry and design. I will try to make geometry easier to remember by the student by breaking its concepts down into components instead of many formulas and definitions. I believe that geometry needs to be drawn to be understood and memorable.
Physical Science
Physical science is the use of math to understand the non-living events around us. Words are used in new ways to describe these events which can be confusing to a student. These words are represented by variables in an equation which adds to the frustration because many new ideas are presented quickly. By making charts and using illustrations I will try to present the new definitions and their associated variables in an orderly manner so that memorization of formulas is easier. Then the application of the math is a simple replacement of variables by numbers. The science is then understood by relating the knowledge of math to the world of science. I have learned many different scientific relationships through years in my chemistry career.
Prealgebra
I have studied math up through 2 years of college calculus and believe that prealgebra is where math starts to be interesting and applicable to the world around us in both purchasing and in the science of the world around us.
SAT Math
The SAT Math test covers algebra 1 & 2 and geometry. The answers to the problems require understanding of concepts and manipulation of equations quickly. There are several methods that can be applied to answer the problems quickly and I will explain and show these by example. Basic math and geometry terms are on the test and must be known. I will define these for you and help you memorize them. I will work through example problems with you for understanding of terms and methods to solve problems. Illustrations and figures will be used to understand concepts in geometry. Algebra rules will be listed and examples will be given. Examples of several types of word problems will be used. I have used these math concepts during my college career for my BS and MS in chemistry fields and during my career as an industrial chemist.
