I have tutored students in math and chemistry over the last two years. I have tutored in math starting in grades 5 and up through algebra 1 and 2 and geometry. I have tutored in chemistry and have an academic and industrial background in chemistry. I believe in learning the logic of the concepts to help students remember the formulas. In this way fewer unrelated facts need to be known and the concepts and formulas are linked together. I use illustrations and example problems with written stepwise procedures. I will go over topics covered in the student's class to add insight and memory aides through charts, graphs, and illustrations. I let the student's classroom notes and textbook be my guide on the subject matter to be taught so that time is not wasted on non relevant material.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The ACT Math test covers math generally learned by the end of 11th grade which includes Algebra 1&2, geometry, and trigonometry. I have taken courses up through 2 years of calculus in college and have used math included in the ACT Math test in my chemistry career and during carpentry repair jobs around my house including staircases on a herring bone pattern deck. I will try to make the memorization of formulas and step-wise procedures for solving the math problems on the test easier by using step lists, giving illustrations, and solving example problems.

ACT Science

Although the ACT science test covers many different science courses it does not need one's knowledge of a lots of facts. Instead the test is over the use of the scientific process. This process includes scientific reasoning, experimental design, use of math in science, understanding data presentation in graphical format, and understanding of scientific text. During my chemistry career I have used these processes as I have worked in industrial plants to solve production problems. I will try to help you to understand the process of solving a problem through the use of scientific principles that can be applied to all of the sciences and many of the scientific encounters of life.

Algebra 1

I have taken courses in math up through 2 years of calculus in college. I have used algebra in my over 25 years of work as a chemist.

Algebra 2

I have taken math courses up through 2 years of college calculus and have found algebra 2 to be useful as I took college level chemistry courses for my BS and MS degrees.

ASVAB

I have tutored students who were behind in elementary math, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, biology, and chemistry. I can help you by patiently helping you with concepts that you missed. Once you learn the new concepts then you can qualify for more career paths in the military.

Chemistry

I started enjoying chemistry as a child as my father worked with me in our kitchen and related chemistry to cooking. Presently, I have a BS and MS degrees related to chemistry and have worked as a chemist for over 25 years in industry. I have tutored students in regular high school chemistry, in AP chemistry, and in college chemistry. I know what is on the AP exam and will help you learn and understand it.

Elementary Math

Math is the relationship of numbers to each other to both solve problems and evaluate products. It is the language of everyday numerical problems from cooking to purchasing. I use math daily and feel that a good base in math is needed to make good life choices.

Elementary Science

I have been fascinated by science since I was little as I have tried to understand the world around me. I have taken many science courses at the college level including chemistry, geology, biology, physics, and astronomy and appreciate how interconnected they all are. I find science is helpful as I read the news as well when I experience my day-to-day life.

GED

The GED is not only an exit from high school but an entrance to the employed population. I will help you obtain this critical step. I have tutored students that are behind, home-school, have an IEP, or are in a ESL program. Don't fret I can help you pass this exam. I break down all concepts into simpler ones. You can remember new strategies because they are based on ones you have already learned. I help you devise step-by step procedures to solve all of your math problems.

Geology

Geology is story that rocks, rivers, and sand tells us about the history of the earth. By understanding geology as I have through college level courses I can both appreciate what has happened to our Earth and what is in its and our future.

Geometry

Geometry is the study of angles and shapes and is useful to many trades including carpentry and design. I will try to make geometry easier to remember by the student by breaking its concepts down into components instead of many formulas and definitions. I believe that geometry needs to be drawn to be understood and memorable.

Physical Science

Physical science is the use of math to understand the non-living events around us. Words are used in new ways to describe these events which can be confusing to a student. These words are represented by variables in an equation which adds to the frustration because many new ideas are presented quickly. By making charts and using illustrations I will try to present the new definitions and their associated variables in an orderly manner so that memorization of formulas is easier. Then the application of the math is a simple replacement of variables by numbers. The science is then understood by relating the knowledge of math to the world of science. I have learned many different scientific relationships through years in my chemistry career.

Prealgebra

I have studied math up through 2 years of college calculus and believe that prealgebra is where math starts to be interesting and applicable to the world around us in both purchasing and in the science of the world around us.

Precalculus

Presently, I tutor for an independent-study high school in precalculus. I have recently taken an intensive review course in precalculus with a 100% score to update and perfect my knowledge of this course.

SAT Math

The SAT Math test covers algebra 1 & 2 and geometry. The answers to the problems require understanding of concepts and manipulation of equations quickly. There are several methods that can be applied to answer the problems quickly and I will explain and show these by example. Basic math and geometry terms are on the test and must be known. I will define these for you and help you memorize them. I will work through example problems with you for understanding of terms and methods to solve problems. Illustrations and figures will be used to understand concepts in geometry. Algebra rules will be listed and examples will be given. Examples of several types of word problems will be used. I have used these math concepts during my college career for my BS and MS in chemistry fields and during my career as an industrial chemist.

Trigonometry

Presently, I tutor for an independent study high school in trigonometry. I have recently taken an intensive review course in trigonometry with a 100% score to update and prefect my knowledge of this course.

Both of the polynomial pieces must be equal to 11.  Thus -7x-2y = 11 and 11x - 2y = 11. Solve the second equation for -2y by subtracting 11 x from both sides and you have -2y =11+11x Substitute this into the first equation where the -2y is and you have -7x + 11 + 11x = 11...

Remember to subtract you change the sign and add. Now the problem is 1/(x-3) +  -2/(3-x) = 4 (x^2-9). Next put the minus sign into the denominator of the second term for 2/-(3-x).  Multiply the minus sign through the parenthesis to have -3 + x and rearrange x - 3.  Now...

Hi Trevor, You make the polynomial into a square by dividing the second term by 2 and squaring it.  22 divided by 2 is 11. And 11 squared is 121.  The completed square for the polynomial is then Z^2 + 22Z + 121.  Thus C must equal 121 for the polynomial to be a square...

Great tutor — Rebecca was great with my son. After she left, I spoke with my son and he stated she explained everything in detail. So, I decided to have her also help my daughter. I wish she had more time so that I can extend it to two days a week. I greatly appreciate her hard work. Thank you, Rebecca! ...
