English, pre-Algebra, history and English as a Second Language tutor

I have been a teacher assistant for 5 years and a classroom teacher for 12. I have taught in classrooms as a teacher and at libraries and homes as a tutor. As a kid I never told anyone that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up; least of all myself, but I was always helping students around me who needed to catch up with the teacher or the rest of the class. Only when I did volunteer work for a school after graduating college did I realize this is what I wanted to do.

I can tutor US and World History, prealgebra, government and English. I laugh and smile a lot, maybe too much. If English is not your original language I can also help you with pronunciation, vocabulary, and cultural aspects of American English. I'm able to help those from literacy to conversational levels.

American History

The history of our great country from the Age of Exploration to the Obama Administration. Personally my favorite subject matter as a schoolboy growing up. Whenever a question comes up among friends and family, all eyes usually turn to me.

Grammar

From crossing the "t's" to dotting the "i's," to making sure that long sentences like this one are not a run-on sentence that needs to be broken up, I can help. At work I was often consulted by my boss to assure that school wide memos were grammatically correct. In writing rental agreements for my family's business I am consulted for my expertise. The correct use of grammar in written and spoken American English, because sometimes correct and precise communication is of the utmost importance.

European History

From the motte and baileys that the Celts built to the Euro Zone debt crisis. My second favorite subject as a schoolboy growing up, right after US history. If you need to know why Hitler had a ship named "Bismarck," or why it took almost 500 years for Joan of Arc to become a saint, I probably have the answer!

Microsoft Word

How to use this most popular of word processing applications. I am always using Microsoft Word, for my church ministry volunteer work and for my job search (at least until I find a new job). If you need to insert a spread sheet table, adjust the margins, add footnotes, or anything of this sort I can help you. As long as you already know how to type on a keyboard.

Prealgebra

The math you need to understand before you can go into Algebra. I can help you with fractions, slopes, solving for "x," plain arithmetic and other such tasks. I will break things down so that you can wrap your head around it and show you why you need to know these things in your future lives. If you have a loved one that needs to know how to read or you yourself can't figure out why Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is so important to the everyday lives of ordinary Americans I can help. I can also help with words that are hard to pronounce or that you don't know the meaning of. I can even show you where to put your tongue or teeth when saying a new word. Literacy is the first step to the world of knowledge waiting on the other side.

Writing

From learning the alphabet, to learning when to indent to start a new paragraph, to knowing how to write a thesis statement, I can help if you or a loved one need to learn to write. I will put an emphasis on making sure that what you write is correct, clear and understood. ESL/ESOL

English as a Second or Other Language. Ingles com segundo idioma. I have taught this subject for 17 years in total. The first 5 years as a teaching assistant and the next 12 as a classroom teacher. Most of this experience teaching level 1 students, but I have taught people that needed to study the alphabet all the way up to people already somewhat fluent. I also love learning about the foreign cultures my students come from. My main specialty.

Government & Politics

If you need to pass the test to become a citizen, or want to know what the "fiscal cliff" is I can help you with this. Or perhaps you want to compare the School House Rock cartoon's version of how a bill gets passed with the realities of Washington politics, I can help you with that too. I was known for correcting my US government teacher while in high school and almost majored in political science in college.

SAT Math

If you are a junior in high school that wants to go to college (or are older and still trying to go to college), but you can't figure out what those stars are in that math problem or have a frightful phobia to figuring out fractions I can help. Bring your practice test to me and let me make things clear as a bell and easy to do. My very first job in my 17 year long teaching career was as a volunteer math tutor at a night school.

World History

In the 9th grade as a fifteen year old I was forced to study world history. I loved it and missed it so much that I went back to study it again in junior college after getting my bachelor's degree! To me it's not about dates as it is about us as one global human family. History is the world's greatest, drama/romance/reality show that ever was is or will be. If you pick me to tutor you in this, I hope I can pass on the love for history I have on to you!
