My name is Alex. I love to teach & also enjoy learning from those I teach. I am a native New Yorker, who has been an enthusiastic resident of California for three months. I have a great wife and a ball of energy in the form of my 15-month-old son named Teddy. I have ten years of teaching experience, but I really started to educate when I was ten. My mom bought me a chalkboard & materials to "tutor" my younger brother & sister in every possible subject, from History to Science. We even made a newspaper for my parents to read covering the news, sports, movies, you name it.

I taught for seven years at New York's Tenement Museum, focusing on immigration history. I led all of the museum's educational programs in both English & Spanish. I went off-site and taught at schools for kids with disabilities. I led presentations in senior centers, did a keynote speech at a College in Pennsylvania about the importance of knowing the heritage of our country - I even taught at a prison!

I was the Social Sciences Chairperson at Catherine McAuley High School in Brooklyn, NY from 2010-2012. I taught History, Economics, Government (civics), and Law. I was also involved with extra-curricular things like the Christmas & Cinco de Mayo celebrations. I always had tutoring & cram sessions for state exams. I received a Bachelor's degree in History, and a Master's degree in Education.

And for fun: Sports (too many different sports to list),movies, chatting with friends about everything, astronomy, & writing. I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge & time - hey, maybe we can both learn a thing or two!

During my senior year in high school, I was awarded the AP Scholar Award (for mastery in at least three honors classes). One of these classes was American History. I was one of 3 students in a school of 4,800 to receive the award.

Vocabulary

Although it can sound boring, vocabulary is important. It feels good to know a variety of words that can express a feeling or thought. This would help to build confidence in you ability to speak in many different circles, ranging from the classroom to the workplace.

One of the awards I received as a high school senior was the Advanced Placement Scholar award, given only to students who mastered at least three honors courses. European History was one of the courses that I excelled at.

Reading

I did not like reading as a kid; I would rather have watched a good documentary about a book instead of reading the book itself. But, once I started to pick up the habit (I started with short stories), I enjoyed it, even outside English & Literature class.

Spanish

Learning a new language can be tough. But, as our world becomes smaller & smaller because of things like the internet, people are communicating across nations & oceans in many languages.

Astronomy

I've been fascinated by the stars since I was a little kid. I was even an astronomy major during my first year of college! But, I enjoy it so much (and I don't love math as much as I love the stars)that I keep it as a beloved hobby.

Geography

I taught World History & Geography for the past two school years at an area high school. I think geography is a subject that our schools in general do not prioritize as much as they should.
So many people make fun of Americans for not knowing basic geography. I want to work with you to change minds, & maybe give you the self confidence to be able to talk with people about geography without hesitation, no matter where you are in the world.

English

English is such a great language, especially because it has words & phrases from other languages. That's why it's fascinating, also not very easy to master.
I grew up in a household where Spanish was the main language, though I was born in New York. My parents always stressed the importance of an education & a mastery of the English language. Government & Politics

Politics can be a very confusing & dirty game. I taught government for two years at Catherine McAuley HS in NY & used famous campaign speeches, films, & creative activities. For example, I gave my class the 1962 Alabama State literacy test which was designed to deny the right to vote for minorities. The class was blown away by the kinds of obstacles people faced in order to participate in our government. Literature

As an undergraduate at SUNY-Stonybrook, one of my minors was religious studies. There was a particular emphasis on the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible, or also known as the Five Books of Moses) and the origin of evil. Regents

When I began teaching at the high school level in 2010-2011, the passing rate for the Global History & Geography NY State regents was just over 50%. Under my guidance as the teacher, the students (and the school) enjoyed an 11% increase in passing marks for the 2011-2012 regents.

I spent two years teaching a college-level high school elective on business & personal law. Part of the curriculum that I created consisted of an entire unit of criminal law and tort law.
