My name is Joseph and I have been teaching for over 23 years at the middle and high school level.
I am the author of 4 published children's books.
I have been trained in several literacy programs and hold an English credential in 3 states.
I also hold a bi-lingual authorization, a Master's degree in learning disabilities and currently hold math credentials in both California and Florida for math grades 5-9.
My abilities lie in teaching English reading and writing and more recently I have been teaching math to low performing students. I can teach those who feel they don't have an aptitude for mathematics.
I have been very successful teaching pre-algebra, pre-geometry and algebra I to students who have not been reaching their potential. I make learning fun and teach through a variety of modalities, making learning relevant to students' needs and students' lives. I have won awards and commendations for improving student performance in years past.
I have vast experience working with students with learning disabilities in all areas.
I teach full-time in the Long Beach Unified school District.

Algebra 1

I have been teaching Algebra I with success for the past 3 years. I use PowerPoint and supplemental materials and I have a talent to get across the big ideas by breaking down concepts into small steps.

Vocabulary

I have a vast vocabulary and can instruct you on how to use word roots, prefixes and suffixes to decipher words you are unfamiliar with...morphology.

Grammar

I am a good proofreader and can readily recognize grammatical and syntax errors.
Editing and constant rewriting of my published books has given me experience in finding the best ways to express ideas using words economically.

Prealgebra

I have extensive experience teaching content of pre-algebra...close to 15 years. I have an extensive collection of supplemental materials and I am extremely familiar with the material.
I can explain things in a simple manner that is understandable and I use real life examples.

Reading

I have been trained in several literacy programs and have access to materials which will address improving comprehension in all areas...finding the main idea, locating answers, drawing conclusions, finding the facts, using the context, etc.

Spanish

I can help with elementary Spanish acquisition. I can assist with vocabulary and basic use of tenses for basic conversation. I am not fluent. I have a wife and 2 children that I am able to communicate with in Spanish. They speak no English and I am good at using cognates to be understood sufficiently. Cognates are words that are similar in both English and Spanish coming from Latin word roots..

Writing

I am a published author of 4 children's books.
Therefore, I have much experience rewriting, editing and revising written material.
Formatting my books and choosing the best way of expressing ideas is a love of mine. I am fascinated by the creative use of language.

English

Fully credentialed in English, particularly adept at vocabulary development, reading comprehension and written skills.
I am a published author.

ESL/ESOL

Taught ESL in public school for a year.
I hold CLAD certification and have taught English as a second language at night to adults.
My wife and 2 young children speak only Spanish and I am teaching them to speak English. They are Dominican.

Literature

I was a major of English literature in undergraduate school. I studied European literature, Italian literature, Shakespeare, and contemporary literature.

GED

I have taught high school and adult school with a multi-subject credential through 12th grade, with specialties in English and math.
I have been teaching for over 23 years and have a Master's degree in education.

SAT Writing

I can show you elements needed to include to successfully pass the written portion of the SAT.

Spelling

Spelling is best developed by reading, reading, reading. Also many words can be broken down morphographically into roots, prefixes and suffixes. The best way to recognize proper spelling is by seeing the words spelled in context while reading.

Elementary Math

Elementary math addresses operations of whole numbers and rational numbers and introduction to integers, involving all operations....many real life applications.

I have instructed many low performing students in upper grades who have holes in their learning which prevent them from moving forward into higher math concepts.

Elementary Science

Includes earth science, basic biology, astronomy, physics and some chemistry. I have taught all the above with many supplemental materials at my disposal.

Elementary (K-6th)

K-6th covers a multitude of skills and subject. Language skills and arithmetic and math are the core of these necessary skills.
Teachers are given multi-subject credentialing to indicate the ability to address this broad spectrum of topics.

I hold a Multi-subject K-12 California credential....that includes through grade 12.

Guitar

Beginning guitar instruction would include some very basic music theory and formation of chords and practicing scales. The most fun would be to actually learn to perform songs of your choice. I have been playing since I was 17 years old. I have performed at various open mic venues and I run a guitar/performance club at the school where I teach.

Study Skills

Many people and especially teachers have told you to study but rarely tell you HOW to study. In math we will learn how to organize our work and use a step-by-step approach to problem solving.
We will examine how to use the table of contents, indexes, view bold letters and chapter headings and how to use the internet to locate answers.

Special Needs

I hold a bi-lingual authorization, a Master's degree in learning disabilities and currently hold math credentials in both California and Florida for math grades 5-9. Special needs includes those students who have developmental delays, emotional disturbance, autism, ADD/ADHD and other learning disabilities that negatively impact their cognitive performance and ability to learn at their level of ability.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Master's degree in learning disabilities. I have been a special education teacher for 12 years and worked with many with ADD/ADHD.

Aspergers

I have a Master's degree in learning disabilities. I have taught special education students for 20 years and hold a K-12 multi-subject credential and single subject English and math authorization.
I was mentor teacher at a non-public school for special needs students and have experience working with high functioning autistic students.

CBEST

CBEST tests general knowledge and basic skills required for a career in teaching. I hold a multi-subject K-12 teaching credential and single subject English in three states and math authorization in two states. My credentialed subjects that the two that are addressed strongly on the CBEST examination. I passed the CBEST easily and I have been a teacher for 24 years.
