I have a bachelor's degree from MIT in Mechanical Engineering, and I am offering tutoring in math, science, and standardized test preparation to local students.
I have experience with both classroom teaching and tutoring. While at MIT, I was a teaching assistant for two semesters of Physics I (Mechanics) and six semesters of Differential Equations. For my work as a teaching assistant, I received an award for teaching excellence. I have also worked for several academic summer programs geared towards high school students and have been tutoring friends and classmates since I was in high school. I love to teach and am beginning work towards a secondary teaching credential in math this year.
My approach to math and science tutoring is based on a partnership between myself and the student. At each session, we will look at the material covered in class that week and at the homework problems pertaining to that material. I typically ask that students attempt the relevant homework problems before a tutoring session, completing the problems that they understand easily and marking the problems that require significant effort to complete without help. Together, we will look at the problems that presented the student difficulty and spend some time discussing the topic(s) covered by those problems. I will provide some similar example problems for us to work through together, and then return to the homework problems once the student has the confidence to complete them without assistance. In this way, students gain an understanding of the material and gain the confidence that they need to succeed in class and on exams.
My approach to standardized test tutoring is practice-based. Using the results of a full-length practice exam, I assess a student's mastery of different content areas. Then, using practice problems from the relevant test, I work with the student to strengthen skills in the content areas where the student needs the most improvement. I can work with test-prep students on a short- or long-term basis, depending on the student's needs.
I am open to one-on-one or group tutoring sessions, whatever suits your needs best. As a former homeschooler, I would also enjoy working with homeschool/independent study students.
