University of Colorado (BA - Psychology, Chemistry)
UCLA Extension (Graduate Coursework)
It is my #1 goal to minimize my students' writing, studying, and test-testing anxieties by helping free them up to actually ENJOY what they're doing. After all, learning is a creative act!
As a trained Academic Manager, my approach to tutoring is highly structured, personalized, fun and effective. I specialize in supporting college and high school students to find a writing process that works for them, and I'm proud to say I've helped dozens of students craft their best papers.
A little about me? I was homeschooled until 8th grade, completed high school at age 16 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado with a BA in Psychology (concentration in Chemistry/Neuroscience). I have proven strengths in English, math and science, including 1,100+ hours advanced training in biology, anatomy and physiology.
Although I have met my pre-med requirements and was hired as an associate professor by CU's Psychology Department while still an undergrad, I chose to hold off on medical school and instead pursue my ambitions of being a professional writer (a goal I have accomplished since moving to Los Angeles!).
In 2013 I earned a certificate in Academic Management from UCLA Graduate Extension, which has pushed the level of support I'm able to offer my students far beyond just basic tutoring. As an Academic Manager, I view each student within the context of their entire education and take a hands-on approach to organization, time management, and proactively making studying a more fun, consistently engaging process. My job is to ease the burden, every step of the way.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you!
"I cannot recommend Bethany highly enough. My daughter was struggling with her grade requirements and tests... with Bethany's help she is flourishing. She has a gentle way of helping my daughter learn as well as keep her focused and on track when she is tired after a long school day. Bethany's tutoring help is such a great asset to my daughter's education. And we are fortunate to have such a reliable and caring person come into our lives." -Julianna B. Bethany is working with my college-age son to find a solution to some obstacles he has had with writing assignments. She is doing exactly what I had hoped, ie, trying different methods and seeing which work best for him. So far, I am thrilled with how it is going.
Your son is a complete joy to work with, Gayle. I'm excited about his progress and happy to be a part of his growth.
Bethany was exactly what I was looking for in an editor. She made recommendations and suggestions I hadn't considered. She kept me informed. I was at ease and totally comfortable. I look forward to working with her in the future. I'm glad I gave WyzAnt a try. Great!
Bethany is always on time and very knowledgeable. My son has passed all of his college tests and has felt comfortable while testing.
I highly recommend Bethany. She is really organized, patient, and competent. My daughter missed two months of school due to illness, and Bethany was able to help her get caught up in a relatively short time. I will certainly call her again if the need arises!
Thanks so much Teresa. Your daughter was an absolute delight to work with, and I have no doubt she will finish the year strong. Of course you are welcome to call me anytime but hopefully she's back on track for good and won't need me! All the best -B
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to graduating with honors as a pre-med student, I trained extensively at the American Institute of Massage Therapy and was named valedictorian with over 1300 hours in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and practicum. I find this subject a blast to teach. In fact, one of my favorite students just finished out her A&P class with flying colors and I'm super proud of her! (It was the first time she'd ever gotten an A in science.)
I've trained extensively as a reading, math, and science tutor at this level. I did outreach through Colorado University at Bates Elementary School, where I helped implement a tutoring program that improved test scores over the course of several semesters. Since then I have continued to work with K-6 students one-on-one basis. It's extraordinary to be part of foundational growth and setting up a child for a lifetime of loving learning!
I had a very strong whole language education and began my college career as an English major. Now as a professional writer and tutor, I am able to provide exceptional English support to my students, including helping their papers go from good to great. And because I have experience working with elementary all the way up through college, I build skills for long-term success in grammar, spelling, vocab, editing, structure and format. This is my favorite work to do.
If what you need isn't so much a one-on-one sit down for essay outlining, I proofread drafts remotely for students and would be happy to help you ace your next essay. I have written and edited professionally for many years and am 100% up to speed on MLA, APA and Chicago style formatting. My technical proofing is detailed and efficient, and I will also make suggestions on how to optimize word choice and sentence structure to strengthen your paper's presentation and flow.
I hold a BA in Psychology with an emphasis in Chemistry/Neuroscience from CU, and my track record was so great there that I was hired by the university to co-teach an undergraduate psych course while I was still an undergrad. I'm well-studied in abnormal, cognitive and positive psychology, statistics, clinical approaches, research and academic writing.
I became fluent in sign at a young age, as I have a deaf sister and my mother is an ASL-certified interpreter. I'm so glad to be fluent and have the opportunity to help others learn. It's an extraordinary skill to have in your back pocket and most certainly one of my favorite subjects to tutor.
I was trained by the University of Colorado Department of Education to administer a reading program to special needs 3rd graders in the community. This entailed a detailed certification course, equipping me to tutor in a group setting at Bates Elementary School. I also did reading tutoring one-on-one with students at the University in an after-school program. Since then, I have worked with a number of students with special considerations, including dyslexia and brain injury.
I recently completed a UCLA extension course to be certified as an Academic Manager. Academic Management is a high-level relational approach to learning that builds on a student's strengths. This includes hands-on assistance with organization, time management, advocacy, and establishing study and work habits that lead to a more positive overall educational experience. My goal is to help the student discover his/her best (and most fun) way to engage with the material presented within the time allotted for the assignment, improving grades and confidence while avoiding unnecessary stress.
Writing has always been my best subject, and I began my college career as an English major. Now as a professional writer and tutor, I am able to provide exceptional support to my students by helping their papers go from good to great. I have experience working with 5/6th grade all the way up through college. Highly adept in grammar, editing, structure and format, this is my favorite work to do.
