Hi there!

My name is Annalee, and I am a research scientist in neural engineering. I love science and have been assisting others in understanding this important subject since I was 17 and in college. I have been certified by the College Reading and Learning Association and was a professional tutor at both Fresno City College and CSUF Fresno. I am able to take what many students find to be a boring, mundane, even confusing subject and turn it into something they can relate to on a daily basis. My grandfather was a science teacher, so I grew up with science in my daily life and would love the opportunity to pass that tradition along! Science is an amazing subject if you know how to teach it that way. I have a double BS in molecular cellular bio and forensic science. I have worked in a lab since age 17 and am now 35- over half my life! I have been a microbiologist, immunologist, virologist, and histologist over the past 17 years. I have worked in all types of labs, and with all types of people. I am a mother of an honors/AP 17 year-old daughter and she got her love of science from me as well. I would love to show students how awesome and applicable science is! Thank you for your time.

Regards,
Annalee

ADD/ADHD

I myself have ADD and am also a certified special needs tutor via LAUSD. I have had many a student, like myself, who's brain just works so fast it's hard to keep up! BUT there is hope and after obtaining 2 bachelor's and tutoring science, math, ESL, and special needs, I am confident I can assist those who need help.

Anatomy

Gross Anatomy, or Macroscopic Anatomy is the study of the human body, its skeletal structure, organs and tissues, muscles, and an overall general functionality.

Microscopic Anatomy includes Histology (the study of tissues) and Cytology (the study of cells), which one needs the assistance of varying types of microscopy to accomplish.

Biology

Biology is the study of all living organisms. It covers the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution as well as taxonomy.
Biology is a broad area of study, but there are the basic principles such as genetics, cell structure, evolution, energy production and exchange, homeostasis, and many other topics that all relate back to one another.
Basic Biology as well as Cellular Biology are covered under this course.

Criminal Justice

My Minor in College was Forensic Science. I took basic and advanced classes ranging in topics such as criminal law to crime scene analysis. I also interned at the County Morgue in Fresno, and the Dept Of Justice Crime Lab while in College (97-2000) I assisted in evidence retrieval, processing crime scenes, blood spatter analysis, fingerprinting, latent print retrieval, trace evidence, ballistics, firearm training, autopsies, illegal substance analysis via reagents or microscopy, and was present at numerous crime scenes in Fresno Ca. I would also attend court to observe the expert witness testimony and how the judicial system played out differently in each case.

Dyslexia

I myself am dyslexic and have had to deal with it my entire life. I have worked for LAUSD as a special needs tutor for this, as well as ADD/ADHD. I have had great success with students, as it's just about slowing down and really reading what is put in front of you. No judgment here! I have the same issue-I have just taught myself various methodologies to avoid mix-ups and be able to process and articulate information properly.

Elementary Math

I currently tutor 4-7th grade math for No Child Left Behind. I have been able to show my students ways to understand math in real-world practice that they can take into the classroom and to boost their self confidence. Math can be a very slippery slope-you miss one step, or are afraid to ask for help, you are not going to get by easily. I am patient and very understanding as I was one of these students, and teaching it has given me the understanding I lacked. Its awesome to see a child figure out the area of a circle or how to use PI and R in an equation when before it just looked like scary jibberish!

Elementary Science

I am a scientist, I learned science from my Grandfather starting at age 4 in his science classroom. I love teaching kids the basics, and have worked as a volunteer science TA at West Hollywood Elm school where I would bring in experiments for the students to do. Doing makes more sense to children-they lit up when I showed them the AC/DC current experiment or the Potato light bulb! I love the look of wonder and awe when they see this in practice!

English

I have worked for the Los Angeles School district for the No Child Left Behind Act. I taught English Arts for ESL students as well as Native Speaking students. I also have tutored College level English 1A, English 15 (creative writing), English 3 (critical reading and writing).

Genetics

I have taken many classes in Genetics (basic and advanced) while in college, and tutored this course at the college level. I am CRLA certified as well. I have worked in 4 different laboratories all of which have used genetic coding for experimental design, and am very familiar with this subject matter and find it absolutely fascinating. from my own experience with my daughter and figuring out what color eyes she would have before she was born, to teaching her how to use a Punnett square to figure out the probability of the color coding of a litter of kittens. Genetics has come a long way since Mendel first made it world known with his Law of Segregation, and being able to help someone learn how our physical appearance, predisposition to disease, even as some have suggested, our likes and dislikes, can all be attributed back to our parents passing down their chromosomes to us... Utterly amazing.

Microbiology

Microbiology is another broad spectrum area of study which includes immunology, virology, bacteriology, mycology, and parasitology. It covers the microscopic organisms we refer to as bacteria, viruses aka pathogenic microbes. Microbiology covers the morphology of different microbes, aseptic technique, gram staining classifications, basic methods of infiltration, symptoms and illnesses created by each "bug" as well as the treatments, resistance of certain treatments and so on. It is a very interesting subject that generally requires use of light microscopy, staining procedures, and streaking on various agar plates to identify the organism.

Music History

I have played Violin since age 6, Bass Guitar since 14, as well as Clarinet. I took Music Appreciation in High School and College and have vast knowledge of nearly all genres of music; from Baroque, Romantic, Classical, Ragtime, Jazz, Jam Rock, Classic Rock etc. Music is the second love of my life-next to science.

Physical Science

I have taught Physical Science at West Hollywood Elementary School. Each week I would conduct a hands-on interactive lab for the students. Also, with a degree in Biology, Physical Science is absolutely part of the required curriculum, and we all apply it in our daily lives.

Physiology

The study of Physiology covers how cells, muscles and organs work together and their independent and collective function. It is the study of the body on a molecular level-understanding how each cell works and how it interacts with other cells and organ systems.
This subject teaches us how our bodies work and why. It is fascinating and truly remarkable!

Psychology

In college due to my Major, I had to take Psychology classes-and not just your basic Psych 101-which I did take! I have taken Criminal Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Human Sexuality, Courtship Marriage and Divorce, and have experience with dealing with those who are dealing with psychological issues. The human brain is the basis of behavior and slight chemical imbalances in the brain can cause mild -severe symptoms. I feel it is a fascinating subject that incorporates neurobiology/anatomy with social behavior.

Special Needs

I was hired as a special needs tutor for the LA School district. I worked with students with varying degrees of learning disabilities including ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, Dyslexia, MR (intellectual disability), among others. I have a lot of patience and unique methods of teaching.
