Tutoring offers me a chance to learn as well as to teach. If done well, tutoring expands and strengthens current knowledge by focusing on specific situations through discussion, theory, and application. Additionally, personal chemistry, that is, the ability to communicate clearly and smoothly between individuals over time is also a key success factor. It is important that a student select the tutor with the "best fit" as well as the tutor selecting the student with the "best attitude".
Learning involves new things and change. For some folks, change is very difficult. For others, change is exciting because the new information unlocks new potential areas of interest and competencies. As an architectural learner, I am constantly trying to leverage what I know in one field and apply to another field in order to understand the fundamentals quicker. In some cases, this ability also brings new insights to a situation. In addition, I am an intuitive thinker that is able to evaluate quickly. For me, knowing my own learning style is an important step in my own education and training. As a potential student of mine, I will expect you to know yourself enough to communicate to me your learning style so that we can get started quickly and efficiently. As a suggestion, I recommend taking a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) evaluation prior to contacting your first tutor. Check the internet for evaluations. My general music background began at the age of 6 when I started piano lessons and played in a recorder choir at church. I took piano lessons for about 5 years. Starting at 11, I took trumpet lessons for the next 8 eight years through about 3 different instructors. During this time, I was the principal tuba player in my junior high orchestra, and in high school doubled on sousaphone and trumpet. After high school, I played in jazz bands, community orchestras, and ensembles until I graduated from USC. After graduation, I played in the Laker Band, the Olympic Band, USC Alumni Band, and some community theater work. In that time, I picked up the flugelhorn, electric bass, banjo, soprano and alto recorders, melodica, electric keyboards, and harmonica.
Currently, as a regular contributor in the music program at church, I have written and arranged some music. As marching band director, I must be able to read, write, perform, and communicate in addition to leading a group. As a Music and Bugling merit badge counselor, I have to know and have experience in music, music history, music performance, instrument types, and lead songs around a campfire.
