I began my teaching career tutoring English in a high-needs charter school in Boston, Mass. After helping my students with research, writing, and editing, every one of my students passed their final exam with a 90% or better.
I next looked for a tutoring opportunity that would let me dedicate myself to just a few students to have the greatest influence possible. I found this opportunity as a member of the Great Oaks Charter School Tutor Corps in Newark, New Jersey (August 2011 - April 2012). As a full-time tutor, I worked with two small groups of middle school students teaching every core subject, including reading, writing, math, science, history, and art history. My secondary responsibilities included substituting, creating learning materials for the math and writing programs, and coaching the school debate and soccer teams.
After that, I decided to earn my master's degree in teaching from the well-regarded Curry School at the University of Virginia (ranked 8th in the nation), which is designed to produce the most committed, organized, and engaging social studies teachers in the country. In May, 2014, I finally earned my master's degree and teaching license and am finally ready to lead my own classroom.
Though I majored in economics, Vassar fulfilled its role as a liberal arts institution by teaching me how to write, edit, and think critically just as ably as I can calculate a country's trade deficit. Whatever your academic needs, if you want a dedicated, energetic tutor who puts the student's achievement over all else, please contact me any time with requests or inquiries.
I have tutored all sections of the ACT before. My versatility makes me unique--I am an excellent writer, but because of my economics degree and love of science, I am highly qualified to tutor those sections as well.
I taught a year of Algebra I in Newark, NJ for a year and since then have tutored algebra to a number of students. I pride myself on my ability to explain problems clearly and to break them down into their components to clearly identify and then strengthen students' weak areas.
As of May 20, I earned my master's degree in social studies education from the Curry School of Education at UVA. I am a history fanatic and am excellent at helping with all aspects of the course--I am a fantastic editor for both style and substance and also know how to make study guides and schedules to help prepare for exams.
I took two years of chemistry in high school, including AP Chemistry, on which test I earned a 5 (the highest possible score). I have kept up with chemistry as a hobby since then and am therefore still perfectly qualified to help tutor high school chemistry.
I have taken the GRE, earning stellar scores, and tutored it twice. The GRE is like most standardized tests--you can be taught to do well on it. With dedicated, experienced tutoring, I can show you where and how you need to focus your studying and then pinpoint your biggest challenges to help you earn the best grade possible.
Verbal Reasoning: 168/170, 98%
Quantitative Reasoning: 166/170, 94%
Analytical Writing: 5.5/6, 96%
I love writing. I edit friends' theses for fun, write essays, poetry, short stories, scripts, and am even finishing up writing the game manual to a board game I'm publishing. At Vassar, I interacted daily with brilliant professors whose first job was to turn us into thinkers, and whose second job was to give us the writing skills needed to express our thoughts on paper. I therefore spent 2006-2010 getting one of the best writing educations money can buy, and I'm always eager to use my skills to help others' writing.
This, I believe, is one of the reasons I am such a great editor: I enjoy taking a piece of writing and making it as concise and clear as possible. Finally, I have the experience editing to support my passion: I edited my high school newspaper, copy edited for an economics magazine, and have been a writing tutor for nearly a decade.
