I am a credentialed Special Education Teacher and work with children who need extra help accessing grade level curriculum or catching up on skills in reading, writing, and math. I strongly believe that every child has the ability to learn, and as an educator it is my goal to discover how each child learns best. I use a multi-modality approach to teaching. This means that learning may involve visual, auditory, tactile or kinesthetic (movement) modalities. Not only do I help students build academic skills, but I also help each child develop self-confidence, awareness of preferred learning styles, and independence. I am also knowledgeable about the new Common Core state standards and help prepare student for the increased analytical skills they must demonstrate in all core subject areas.

Please feel free to request references if you like. I look forward to helping your child succeed!

ADD/ADHD

I have worked extensively with students with ADHD in a special education classroom and privately for the last 9 years. I hold an education specialist credential and have done extensive research on instructional and behavioral methods/accommodations for students with ADD/ADHD.

Aspergers

I have worked with many students who have Aspergers Syndrome. Many of these students possess high cognitive skills, but need assistance with social skills. Techniques I have used include rating scales, social stories, and role playing. In addition, students with Aspergers are very concrete thinkers, and thrive on routines and clear expectations. I hold an Autism Authorization Credential.

Autism

I hold an Autism Authorization Credential and have worked daily with students on the Autism spectrum in my position as a special education teacher. My students thrive with structured behavior and academic instruction.

Dyslexia

As a credentialed special education teacher I work with students daily who have Dyslexia, as well as other visual processing disorders. My students have acquired skills using an Orton-Gillingham reading method which is specifically designed to help learners with these difficulties.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a mild/moderate education specialist credential. In addition I have worked with preschool, elementary, and middle school children in the a classroom environment for the past 9 years. I have also worked privately with all of these age groups, as well as high school students for over 30 years.

Elementary Math

I am a credentialed special education teacher and utilize a variety of multi-modality techniques to help students gain a conceptual and practical application of mathematics.

Phonics

As an education specialist I have worked extensively using a phonics based Orton-Gillingham reading program, among others. I start by assessing a student's needs in this area so that instruction begins at a his or her level and progresses from there to build up knowledge in a sequential order. Using multi-modality techniques, my students have acquired skills quickly that they can transfer to reading texts fluently.

Reading

Reading is a fundamental skill that is necessary for success in all academic areas. When students learn not only to read fluently, but read for meaning, the process becomes enjoyable and even magical. I help my students develop strategies that help them develop both the fluency and analytical skills to become proficient readers, while also expanding their vocabularies and their thinking.

With the new Common Core state standards, students are required to read and analyze at more complex levels. As a credentialed special education teacher, I have been teaching to these standards for the last year and am knowledgeable about the skills that students must have. My reading instruction not only focuses on the fundamentals of word reading, but how to read for depth of meaning, teaching students to become analytical thinkers.

Special Needs

I have a mild/moderate education specialist credential and have worked for the past 9 years with children with a variety of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance and ADHD. I use a variety of academic and behavioral techniques to help students with motivation and learning.

Study Skills

One primary focus of my approach with students is to help them with organization and study skills. I find that many students need a system that is easy, personal, and efficient. When they have a workable system in place they feel more organized and able to better focus on studying. I also work with students on how, where, and when to study. I believe that there are many obstacles to good study habits, and just as many things you can do to make your environment more study friendly. Finally, I teach students techniques, such as using mnemonic devices, note taking, and auditory/oral learning strategies to make their study more effective.

Writing

I have worked extensively with students who are reluctant writers, or whose writing skills are not reflective of their personal knowledge. For many students, writing is a painful and demoralizing process. I strive to help students develop strategies to plan, edit and revise their writing, find their own unique voice, and learn to enjoy expressing themselves through the written word.

With the new Common Core state standards, students are required to now be able to explain their thinking through writing. I provide a structured writing program that ties reading comprehension and writing skills together so that students are prepared for classroom writing demands and future state testing requirements.

Truly amazing A few months ago we hired Janis H. to tutor our first grade son. He had been tested for ADHD, and it had been recommended that we hire a teacher tutor to work with him on his school work. We chose Janis because of her experience with children who have ADD and other learning disabilities. It is truly amazing to see the transformation that our son has made since he started with Janis. Our son loo ...
