Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary school is perhaps the most vital period of learning a student will experience. The basics, as they are known, of reading, writing, and arithmetic provide the foundation for all subsequent learning. If a student misses out on mastering these essential skills, catching up can be exceedingly difficult.

My experience working with elementary students has taught me that even the most challenged pupil can make tremendous progress given an opportunity. My philosophy of teaching is based on positive reinforcement and praise. I stress that everyone has strengths and challenges, but that everyone can also learn to work within those limits.

I work to establish a cooperative relationship with each student that takes into account his or her unique learning style. If the child is a visual learner, we can incorporate the use of drawing, tables, charts, etc., to approach the subject in a more relatable, accessible way. If the child is a sensory learner, we can bring those elements into reading a story. Each child can learn to learn!

I have taught reading and writing classes to students in remediation through enrichment. I am an experienced substitute teacher and now work in the Walnut Creek School District. My work has also included teaching summer writing classes at a local private school. I am proficient in teaching all subjects in elementary school and am familiar with the state curriculum and benchmarks. I was a director/teacher at a large preschool and day care center for many years and feel that my knowledge of early childhood development has been of tremendous benefit in working with young children.

English

English language arts skills are absolutely vital for anyone in America, regardless of age or profession. Speaking, reading, and writing in a clear and focused manner can help people in nearly every area of life, and these skills are intertwined. As a student gains proficiency in one area, it tends to spill into all areas of learning. Reading a math problem or a science paper both require a foundation of good reading skills. Writing a report or a business proposal require excellent writing practices. Speaking in a clear, concise, and dynamic way helps not only in the school or professional world but also in achieving confidence in all areas of life.
I work with all of my students in an individualized way. Everyone learns differently, but everyone can learn.

Study Skills

I have worked with students individually and have taught classes on study skills and test preparation for some years. My approach is to help to lessen the anxiety often associated with studying and test taking by breaking down the tasks into a series of workable steps. We can then move on to organizing the task, setting priorities, and establishing a timeline. I go over specific skills with my students (note taking, finding important information, understanding expectations...) and work directly with them to help them evolve as students and become more confident and independent learners.

Writing

Writing is a fundamental skill needed to succeed both in school and in the business world. I promote a careful series of writing steps, from brainstorming through the polished paper, to enable students to achieve their best possible work. I have had success with even the most reluctant writers. My approach is individualized, and I work with students to help them learn lifelong writing strategies. I believe that following the six traits of writing is an essential strategy to producing a paper of which any student can be proud.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
