I specialize in SAT preparation. Even though I have the qualifications to tutor many different subjects, I have chosen to focus exclusively on this particular test in an effort to provide you with the most sharply-focused, efficient, and effective private instruction available.
Getting a high score on the SAT requires more than just being good at algebra, geometry, critical reasoning, writing, and grammar. You also need strategies for taking the exam that will help earn you the most points possible. My goal is to give you personalized lessons that will increase your knowledge in the three basic subject areas of the test, help you identify and deal with trap questions, and provide you with specific approaches to each type of test question.
During my 20 years of experience as a college professor, I have taught students with various backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. I have spent countless hours working one-on-one with these students helping them overcome obstacles to their success. I am eager to put this experience to work for you by helping you develop a goal-oriented plan for taking the SAT that plays to your personal strengths.
As a tutor, I believe it is important for me to keep my own SAT scores recent for a couple of different reasons. First, taking the test myself helps to keep me abreast of any changes to its format, scoring, and/or administration. Second, going through the experience of sitting for the exam helps me to stay in tune with the kinds of practical issues that you will face on exam day. I most recently took the SAT in November of 2013; I scored in the 99th percentile overall.
My rates are very competitive among the top tutors in my area. Also, my tutoring is 100% satisfaction guaranteed. If you are not happy with the personalized instruction I offer you, you will not be billed for the session.
You will find me friendly, patient, enthusiastic, and reliable. Contact me today, and let’s get to work!
The SAT math section tests your understanding of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. If you are already a math whiz, I will help you learn how to avoid trap answers on the difficult questions. If you are an average math student or you struggle with math, my approach with you will be two-pronged. First, we will brush up on the basics – focusing on only the algebraic and geometric principles you need to understand in order to do well on the exam. Second, I will teach you strategies for finding the correct answers to questions even if you are not able to work out the solution using the mathematical principles that the test-makers are expecting you to use.
The Critical Reading section of the SAT contains two types of questions: sentence completion questions and reading comprehension questions. There is a set of vocabulary terms that appear year-after-year in the sentence completion questions. You will learn these vocabulary terms, but you will also learn how to maximize your chances of getting a sentence completion question correct even if you don’t know the meanings of all the words in the question. In the reading comprehension questions, the SAT test-makers tend to ask the same types of questions over and over. We will go over these different question types, and I will teach you strategies for approaching each of them.
I will teach you effective strategies for maximizing your score on the error identification and sentence/paragraph improvement questions in this section. (I used these strategies the last time I took the test and did not miss a single question.) Some students find the essay daunting, but SAT graders are actually only looking for a few very specific things when they evaluate your essay. You will learn how to write an essay that possesses these essential characteristics in our sessions together.
