Hi, my name is Joan and I love to help students feel more confident in their skills. I have been tutoring all levels for 20 years. I give lessons at my home on Bales Drive in Walnut Creek and am available for lessons afternoons, evenings and weekends. I graduated with honors from both the United States Coast Guard Academy and San Jose State with degrees in Civil Engineering. I am a licensed civil engineer, general contractor and have passed the CBEST. I am a full time mom and am trying to keep my skills current by helping those who are having difficulties in their classes.

I love to help the students find their abilities and grow with them. I work one on one and so can explain the each subject as needed. I tailor each session to meet the needs of the student and to help them progress in their knowledge. My only wish is that the student would begin to excel in their subjects.

I have been background checked for my Top Secret Clearance in the U.S. Coast Guard, for my Real Estate Salesperson license and my General Contracting license.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the extension of Algebra 1 and helps to create the foundation for Calculus. I have tutored students in Algebra 2 and have been able to bring one student's grade up from a D to a B-. I like to help students realize that the skill they learned in Algebra 1 will help them learn the complexities of Algebra 2.

American History

American History is such a fun and interesting subject. I love to help students learn about our varied and exciting history. I also help students study for tests and learn the best way to learn and remember the important facts about American History.

Calculus

Calculus can be a very complicated subject that is very broad in its usage. I am a licensed Civil Engineer and used Calculus for much of my work. I would like to help your student to better understand and use Calculus.

Vocabulary

Learning what is the best word to use in any situation can be fun and exciting. I love to work with students and help them to learn how to express themselves in a clear and understandable way. I have a love of the written word and would relish the opportunity to teach you how to love it, too.

Grammar

Grammar can be very confusing to many people. I have helped others with grammar and writing. I hope to make it easier for others to know how to use the rules of grammar more effectively.

Microsoft Excel

MS Excel is a great program for organizing data in an easy to understand spreadsheet format.

General Computer

I have worked on computers for over 30 years and worked in IT at the City of Walnut Creek for 5 years helping city personnel fix problems and optimize software for city use. I have worked in many programs and taught others how to use programs more efficiently. I often taught seminars on how to use the programs I developed for the City of Walnut Creek.

Geometry

Geometry is the relation of shapes to each other and within themselves. It is a fun and exciting subject that will help in many ways in your life.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a very capable word processor used by many industries and helpful in all work or school. I worked in Information Technology for 5 years with the City of Walnut Creek and was responsible for teaching personnel to use their software and have worked with all levels of understanding.

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a great software package for making presentations. It is easy to use and can include animations, music, videos, and many other features. I have used PowerPoint for years in my previous jobs and would love to teach you how to use it.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra teaches the student to understand the processes of Algebra and helps them to understand how to look for the unknown.

Precalculus

Precalculus is the bridge between calculus and trigonometry. It can be a very confusing class, but I hope to make it fun for your student. As their understanding grows they will find that it is a very systematic subject and following the procedures will get you to the right place.

Reading

Reading is such an integral part of any learning experience that it is important to make sure that the comprehension is there. I would appreciate the opportunity to help students to help students get the most out of their reading and be able to apply that knowledge.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a fun subject of relations. Once you learn the relationships of the identities, you will realize that it is a straightforward and fun subject.

Writing

Writing can be a difficult subject for many people. It is important to be able to organize your thoughts and create a clear vision of your purpose for each paper. I would love to help your student do just that. I have been editing papers since I was in college. I was known to be fair but truthful with my editing and helped many of my classmates create papers that were more clear and concise.

English

English can be a confusing language, but practice can help with usage and the more you expand your vocabulary, the better you will do in English. I used to edit my classmates papers in college and would often find the grammar and writing errors that they had missed and be able to help them improve their grades. I often find myself making corrections in published books that were missed by the editors.

SAT Math

Math is so much fun, but taking a test that can affect the rest of your life can be daunting. I have ways to help you relax and feel confident in your abilities so that you will perform well on your test.

World History

The world is a large and exciting place. I love all history and would like to help your student to love and understand the history of the world and how that effects us today. I can help your student to study more effectively and find ways to better understand the history they are studying.

Proofreading

I am no stranger to proofreading. I have been proofreading others papers for many years. I often edited my classmates papers to ensure that they made sense and use the correct words to get their point across. Subject is not was is important in proofreading, what is important is that you can make a layperson understand what you have just spent many hours researching.

GED

The GED is a great way to accomplish high school completion. I have been tutoring test preparation for over 10 years and would like to help your student to improve their test taking skills as well as brush up on knowledge.

SAT Reading

One of the subjects of the SAT. I have been tutoring SAT tests for many years and have strategies and techniques to help with testing.

SAT Writing

Writing can be a confusing area, but with some help and practice there are ways to improve your understanding of the questions and how to best answer them.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading is more about how you approach each essay you have to read and how to answer the questions effectively and quickly. I can help your student to improve understanding and speed while reading for the ACT.

ACT English

ACT English is a test that can be tricky and a little daunting. I help students figure out how to study and how to get the best score possible on the test.

ACT Science

ACT Science is all about reading comprehension and analyzing data to come to logical conclusions. It is a great test for students to show their reading comprehension and understanding of basic science principles. I have worked with tutoring students to prepare for tests and can help develop good test habits and refine testing skills.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is the foundation for everything to come. It is very important to feel comfortable in your skills at this level or future years will be harder. Creating a strong foundation will make the future years much easier to understand.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in all levels of schooling. I spent the last year tutoring a 3rd grader, and my son is in 3rd grade, so I am very familiar and comfortable with teaching that grade. I have also been tutoring students in 8th grade and helping them to achieve success in their subjects. I have tutored 6th and 7th grade math and worked with many students to help them with understanding and success in their subjects.

Phonics

I have worked with students to teach them the use of phonics as a decoding tool for reading. Phonics is a great way to teach children how to use the sounds of each letter or group of letters to determine what a word is and how to fit it into a sentence. I have worked extensively with my son who is now a 3rd grader on phonics and am teaching my 4 year old phonics as well to begin his reading.

Study Skills

I have worked with many students in their organization and use of study skills. I have used Mind Maps to assist in memorizing information and helping students to be more efficient in their studying. It is often helpful to work with students and create systems for them to use to organize their studies and make sure that all the assignments get done properly. Differential Equations

I have worked in tutoring Calculus which uses Differential Equations extensively to determine values. I can teach a student how to use differential equations in their studies of electrical engineering, mechanical vibrations and other studies.

Public Speaking

I have been public speaking since I was in high school and was on the Speech and Debate team at Simi Valley High School. Since then I have used my public speaking for college classes, presentations at work and in my volunteer work. I am a cub scout den leader and volunteer with the local PTA for many events. I can teach others how to make effective speeches that are clear and concise, as well as teaching the principles of how to build a speech.

AutoCAD

I first began working in AutoCAD in 1991 and have been working in AutoCAD since. I taught classes at conferences on how to use AutoCAD and have worked in many of the products, Civil Design, AutoCAD Map, Land Desktop in many versions. I can help students to find what type of AutoCAD to use for each project and how to best use the software you have.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST the first time I took it and have taught many students test taking skills for the SAT and ACT as well. I can teach how to write an effective essay and how to best answer the questions on the CBEST so that the student has the best opportunity to pass.

Microsoft Access

I was a database manager at City of Walnut Creek and worked in MS Access to support city functions and their mapping system. I was responsible for creating, maintaining, modifying and expanding MS Access databases for the Community Development Department to assist in their duties.

Civil Engineering

I am a licensed Civil Engineer. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Civil Engineering and have worked as a civil engineer for a firm in plan checking.
