My approach to tutoring is based on my years of experience in chemistry and of explaining it to a wide range of individual students each with their own experiences and backgrounds. Over the years I have found there are bridges between the chemical concepts and the student’s own experiences, which can enable the understanding. This comes from learning about the student and helping them excel by explaining many of the difficult concepts in their own terms. I have helped and enjoyed working with students at my universities that other tutors did not want to help. Whether English wasn't their first language or they had a learning disability that was making the mathematics of chemistry challenging, they were able to succeed because of their hard work once they were explained the concepts in their own terms.
I began tutoring Calculus when I was taking it as an undergraduate student. My professor noticed that I was helping students in his class and I was doing extremely well in his class so he recommended me to the tutoring center. I have enjoyed tutoring ever since. After taking chemistry I began tutoring it also and with these two subjects as well as working in the stockroom I was able to pay for most of my education. Most of the students I tutored came by word of mouth from my previous students.
I have a BS in Chemistry and took all of the course work for a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry but actually graduated with a Ph.D. in Toxicology. In graduate school I designed and built mass spectrometers but switched to Toxicology when my professor lost his funding. I taught the general chemistry laboratory and then was promoted to teaching premedical instrumental analysis. I received the departmental teaching award for my work in that class. I continued to tutor during graduate school. I have nearly forty scientific publications and book chapters from applying my chemistry knowledge to challenging problems in biochemistry and material science. I continue to use my chemistry background to solve difficult scientific challenges posted on open-innovation websites for financial awards as well as do basic research.
Please let me know if I can help you with your understanding of chemistry or mathematics.
