Hello,

I greatly enjoy helping others learn, especially English, as this language can help them improve their life. My students have all come up to grade level or above through my thorough teaching, accurate assessment of needs, and utilization of proper learning materials. I am a mature woman with vast experience in teaching, nursing, administration, recreation, home economics. It is thrilling and rewarding to see a student grow in their knowledge and skills in language.

At ten years of age, I was asked to educate a Cuban, non-English speaking student. Although I had no prior knowledge of Spanish, I began by trading vocabulary and sentence structure. I learned Spanish through four years of high school Spanish and two semesters in college.

While in Nursing school, I discovered the benefits of translating for physicians, families, and patients. As an RN at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles I was the main translator in our NICU,helping families understand the medical condition and assisting physicians to communicate with the families of the premature baies or ones born with congenital anomalies.

As Southern California grew in population, the Latino population grew even more and as various persons heard me translating in doctors offices, banks, pharmacies, libraries, grocery stores, restaurants, and schools, I was requested by two private schools to teach Spanish. At the Lutheran school I had students to grades 1-4; at the Episcopal school, I instructed grades 5-8. Having taken three other languages besides English, I began teaching with an inductive method, with building vocabulary and small sentences. The deductive method teaches rules, and verb conjugation first, and students easily give up and fail. My students all quickly began talking to eachother, their gardeners, nannies, and housekeepers; the parents were thrilled at the benefits of communication and the spirit of well being and success it fostered within their homes.

Some years later, I was sought out by Professional Tutors to teach ESL, as I was publicly known to be a Reading Specialist and proficient with families both in language and medical issues.

More recently I have been working as an RN with Hospice, developing a team of Latino nurses, home health-aides, social workers and chaplain to work with me and Latino Physician. This would provide end of life care in Spanish for the multitude of Latinos in our area. I am returning to my love of teaching and tutoring. It has been some decades since that first little Cuban boy, but the satisfaction of learning this brings to students and families is tremendous, and rewarding for me.
