French

My family immigrated to Montreal, Canada, from Haiti when I was 2 years old.

I grew up speaking and writing French. I did all of my studies in French. I was immersed in the French culture at an early age. This means that I have an in-depth grasp of the vocabulary, grammar, and cultural idioms and expressions. I am an experienced tutor with a sense of humor.

But because my family is Haitian, I also speak fluent Creole.

My favorite cousin while growing up in Montreal was a French teacher. I got my passion for learning and for languages from her. My first English class was in middle school. I loved it and as a result excelled at it. My teacher found many ways to make learning the language interesting. That is what I want to do for my students. Since every person learns differently, I want to find a way to help improve my students’ understanding of French but also to help them foster enthusiasm for learning the beautiful language. I focus on the practical aspects of learning; the student will learn conversational French, not just vocabulary, grammar, and verbs.

I started tutoring at my godmother’s community center when I started high school. I am a people person - I have the ability to make another person feel comfortable. It made the newly immigrated people feel more at ease with learning since they felt comfortable with me as their tutor. They felt comfortable making mistakes and generally enjoying the process. It is hard enough moving to a new environment. I wanted the process of learning the language of their new country to be as effortless as possible.

I have experience tutoring children from ages 6 to 18 as well as tutoring adults who have never learned French. I have tutored most of the children in my neighborhood in Montreal and at the community center. With over 20 years of experience, I have tutored French, English (also as ESL at my college), and math. Tutoring is a passion for me and I want to use this passion to help you learn a new language.

If you are looking for a tutor, you are looking for me.

My schedule is flexible and my rates are reasonable.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
