Although I enjoyed the challenge of teaching math and physics in several private high schools, I always felt I was at my best in one on one situations, which in a classroom setting are all too brief. Therefore, once I retired from teaching in Los Angeles in 2005, I immediately kept myself busy as a private tutor and have felt a real fulfillment as a teacher, something that I believe inspires my student beyond the actual subject matter.

I am versatile and can tutor many different subjects. Besides a BS in physics, I also have a BA in Classics, both from the University of Texas at Austin. Thus I can also tutor in Latin, Ancient Greek, I am fairly fluent in German and can tutor all levels as well as basic levels of French. Recently I have even tutored in AP European History.

But since physics is my first love and the language of physics is mathematics, then my greatest experience tutoring is in math, all levels from 7th grade pre-algebra through AP Calculus and Statistics in 12th grade and even into differential equations and some advanced calculus at the college level.

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, I excelled in 3 semesters of calculus, followed by Differential Equations and a semester of Advanced Calculus.

I like to inspire in my students a real enthusiasm about the subject which is really key to mastering the ideas and cutting through the complexity of it all.

Algebra 2

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, I excelled in 3 semesters of calculus, followed by Differential Equations and a semester of Advanced Calculus.

My BS degree in physics required the above math proficiency and so I really enjoy tutoring in the subject of calculus because it is so fundamental for college work in the hard sciences.

I taught 2 years of Calculus, Precalculus and Algebra 2 at a private high school in Los Angeles and have been tutoring mainly in all upper high school math subjects since I retired from class teaching in 2005.

Calculus

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, I excelled in 3 semesters of calculus, followed by Differential Equations and a semester of Advanced Calculus.

I taught 2 years of calculus at a private high school in Los Angeles and have been tutoring mainly in all high school math subject since I retired from class teaching in 2005.

I would then say that calculus is my favorite subject to tutor.

Geometry

I taught 2 years of math & physics at a private high school in Los Angeles and have been tutoring mainly in all high school math subject since I retired from class teaching in 2005.

I like tutoring in geometry because the focus on logic in proofs helps the student develop critical thinking skills needed for all careers, especially in business and in law

German

I learned to speak German fluently while on active duty with the US Army in the early 70's at the Defense language Institute located in Monterey, California. The certificate I earned there is equivalent to more than two years coursework towards a BA in German at any college.

Although my degrees are in physics and classical languages and I am most experienced as a mathematics tutor, nonetheless, I have tutored a few students in the German language and enjoy doing so.

Latin

Although my primary background is in physics and mathematics, I do have a BA degree in Classics from the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied the Ancient Greek and Latin languages.

I fell in love with the Latin language when I was a young boy growing up Roman Catholic in New York City and attending Masses that, in those days, were all spoken and sung in Latin. In high school I took 3 years of Latin classes.

I find that the study of Latin and Greek helps immensely in many fields of study and in business careers. Not only in the study of law whose terminology is Latin, or in medicine whose terminology is primarily Greek, but in all other sciences and in the liberal arts.

The English language really becomes clear and vivid for a student and a writer when he or she discovers just how much our language, and Latin is especially important for understanding any and all of the so-called Romance languages: Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian, etc., because all of them are offshoots of the Latin language of the ancient Romans.

Physics

I have ten years experience teaching and tutoring HS physics and mathematics in Los Angeles and love the challenge of helping students appreciate math as the language of physics and the key to unlocking so many of the difficulties students usually have with physics.

And, having taught undergraduate physics labs for 4 years at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, I also focus on a practical hands-on approach to the problems and questions that student encounter in the textbook and throughout the lab portion of the course.

I majored in physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and received my BS in physics from University of Texas at Austin.

Precalculus

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, I excelled in 3 semesters of calculus, followed by Differential Equations and a semester of Advanced Calculus.

My BS degree in physics required the above math proficiency and so I really enjoy tutoring in the subject of calculus because it is so fundamental for college work in the hard sciences.

I taught 2 years of Calculus along with Precalculus and Algebra 2 at a private high school in Los Angeles and have been tutoring mainly in all upper high school math subjects since I retired from class teaching in 2005.

SAT Math

Over the past 8 years I have tutored many student in SAT prep, usually math, but also in verbal and a few in the newer writing section.

Using the workbooks (usually Kaplan's or Princeton Review) I have devised a systematic approach that reviews the math concepts if necessary but also puts the student under timed test conditions. I also coach in the techniques to approach the test, when to guess and when not to guess.
