I am more than just a tutor with a lot of tutoring experience. I have been a professional writer and editor for nearly twenty years and a writing, communications and English-related college professor since 1997. In addition to a terminal degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California, I have a Master's degree in teacher education. I understand more about what you need to accomplish than just what the assignment says. If you need non-academic editing or writing help, these same skills are applied to ensure that your work is exactly what you envision.

International students: I am a certified TOEFL Writing scorer at Educational Testing Service. I can help you to prepare for the test.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have worked in higher ed as an English teacher since 1997. I have worked online teaching English Language Arts courses since 2006. I have a B.A. in English. I am a professional writer. I have a Master of Professional Writing.

ESL/ESOL

As a tutor in college and working for a community college in Los Angeles, I worked primarily with ESL students to refine their grammar skills. In all of my higher education experience, all but one school was immensely multi-cultural. I taught developmental English in most ground campuses, mainly to ESL adults.

Literature

I have a BA in English, which was generally a literature degree. I have 30 units of coursework toward a Masters in Rhetoric & Composition, which requires extensive literature and lit analysis courses. I am a professional writer, mainly fiction, and have been so for over 20 years.

Microsoft Word

I have used Word since its inception. As a writer, it is the main program I use on the computer. I have also used Word in office situations, creating annual reports, communications, newsletters, etc.

Proofreading

I have worked in higher ed as an English teacher since 1997. I have worked online teaching English Language Arts courses since 2006. I have a B.A. in English. I am a professional writer. I have a Master of Professional Writing. I have been a professional editor for over 20 years.

Public Speaking

The thought of speaking to a live audience can be intimidating to many. Fortunately, with a little preparation, visualization and affirmation, the experience always ends up better than expected.

I have been speaking to crowds of students (of all ages) since the 1990s and I have trained groups of instructors for almost as long. Heck, I've even taught others how to prepare and deliver public addresses. I have a strong educational background in rhetoric, which is the art of using language to communicate, and I worked in the film and television industries, two of the most communication-centered industries in existence, for nearly fifteen years. If there's anyone who can help you prepare for public speaking... and that includes getting over the jitters... it's me!

Reading

I have worked in higher ed as an English teacher since 1997. I have worked online teaching English Language Arts courses since 2006. I have a B.A. in English. I am a professional writer. I have a Master of Professional Writing. I have been a professional editor for over 20 years. Everything I have done as a teacher has involved helping students read better, including students whose first language is not English and students who were never encouraged to read at home.

TOEFL

I am a TOEFL Writing test scorer for Educational Testing Service (ETS), so I have "inside knowledge" about what scorers are looking for.

Vocabulary

I have worked in higher ed as an English teacher since 1997. I have worked online teaching English Language Arts courses since 2006. I have a B.A. in English. I am a professional writer.
