Hello,
My name is Sergia, and I love working with children and empowering adults to learn. I've been a tutor for 5 years now. I'm a native of Puerto Rico so I'm fluent in Spanish. I'm a mother myself to a 4 year old little girl, and I understand the need to want our children to succeed in school. I'm very patient but stern. I prefer to make learning fun and make children comfortable with making mistakes. "If we're afraid to make mistake how will we learn from them?"
I have a Bachelors degree in creative writing and theater. As a writer and actor, I have learned to be very creative with my students. They get to use their imaginations when I ask them to talk about what they've just read or draw a picture. This allows them to start exercising their vocabulary, motor skills and reading comprehension skills. When they have a personal experience with what they've just read, they now have more to write about. Of course I keep the LAUSD Standards in line with what I'm teaching. I can also speak to them in Spanish if they're ESL Students.
I have also developed a new-found love for fractions and pre-algebra as a tutor. Seeing the children learn is very rewarding. Their problems with math are usually due to something they didn't quite grasp in their first years of learning math. So I make sure to go back all the way to 1st grade level math and up to see if they forgot anything. Usually that's the case for most of the students I've worked with.
I hope you find the right tutor for your child. If you choose me, I will work hard to help them achieve their goals.
Thanks for your consideration.
