I was a pre-med student at Cal, I graduated with a BA in Botany which is the biology of plants. I majored in Botany because the Ecology and Biology departments were over-enrolled but we studied most of the same issues and how plants, animals and ecosystems are interrelated. I have always loved science and the study of living things. I taught an after-school science program for 3 years and I give private guitar lessons to students of all ages. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm and knowledge with you and/or your child.
I am a 59 year old college graduate. I have been an after-school science program instructor as well as a writing coach at Albany High School. I have been teaching children of all ages guitar for the last 15+ years. I also was trained for and taught a spring break learning coach program where we helped elementary school students prepare for standardized testing. I have recently moved to Vallejo (Glen Cove area) and have lots of free time I can devote to your child. I also have reliable transportation and both mac and pc computers in my home.
Math and science are so important to your child's success in today's world and elementary school children can easily be turned off to those subjects at their young age. I want to make a difference and help to ensure that your child gets the foundation and the self-confidence that he or she will need to go into any field they want to and not have to say, "oh I can't do that because it takes too much math" which I have heard lots of young people say.

I've been playing music since I was 8 years old. I played clarinet in junior high and high school bands. I performed (guitar, keys and vocals) in rock & roll bands for more than 30 years. I have been giving private guitar lessons and some music theory for the past 12 years, I would love to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for music with you or your child.
In today's world of spell check and text-speak, it is even more important that our children learn to spell and use proper grammar. Spell-check can make corrections that we don't really want.
Proper grammar is one of the most important elements of good communication skills and in today's global village it is even more important that our children be able to communicate with people outside of their peer group. Whether talking to a prospective employer, or applying to college or even in business, good grammar is important for proper communication.
I have been performing, recording and teaching guitar for over 30 years. I enjoy sharing my passion for music and particularly the guitar with students of all ages. I work with you to design your lesson plan based on your learning style, ability and musical goals.
Private lessons give the opportunity for immediate feedback. During a typical session, I may review assignments, listen to the student play, make comments, explain the theory involved in a particular exercise or piece, or play an assignment so the student can hear it performed with proper technique and styling. Usually there will an assignment to practice before the next lesson or I can work with the student on their homework from other classes.
I offer the first half hour for free, to determine if there's a good match in personalities and learning/teaching styles between the teacher and student.

I love to read and I also am writing a book. I believe that reading (and particularly reading outside of school) is very important and an exciting way to learn about the world around us as well as stimulate the imagination.
I have written over 30 songs and studied composition. I have won honorable mention award in a songwriting contest for writing the music to a children's song based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I have taken courses and consider myself fluent in electronic music and midi music production and have a recording studio in my home.
Spell-check can make corrections that we don't really want and in order to look up the spelling of a word, you need to know at least approximately how to spell it.

Reading and writing are so much more important than most young people are aware of. In addition to all my other experience, I am also writing a book and have written several trade magazine articles and reviews in the past.
