Hello my name is Ambyr and I'm here to tutor you or your student!
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from Kent State University in May 2013. Before switching to Public Health, I was a Pre-Med major. I performed exceptionally well in classes ranging from: Math (Basic, Algebra, Calculus, Geometry), Science (Biology, Human Genetics, Chemistry, Physics), and English (Reading, Writing, Comprehension, Essays), to name a few. I was the co-editor of a school newspaper and I also organized multiple presentations, speeches, and subject-related events. I took over six years of Spanish language and interned at an immigrant worker law office translating Spanish to English documents and conversations.
I began tutoring students approximately eight years ago in Ohio. I generally tutored younger students in Math, English, Foreign language, and Science. Tutoring the younger students not only allowed me the opportunity to spread the knowledge that I'd gained over the years, but, it also challenged me to reach higher educational goals. During college is where the bulk of my tutoring experience is derived. I began tutoring my peers in some of the harder classes such as Calculus, Intermediate Spanish, and General and Organic Chemistry. What I found is that no particular subject is "too hard" for anyone, it's just a matter of explaining a concept in unique ways most appealing to the particular student.
I love tutoring because I get the opportunity to show students how fun learning can be! I also understand the need for students to comprehend material in the most effective and least amount of time possible. I was a student once and I worked three jobs throughout college, which meant that I needed to comprehend concepts in a shorter amount of time than others. Believe me, I understand.
My goal is to establish an open line of communication, with the student, that will allow for a safe and trusting learning environment. I will be prepared to answer any question within the scope of my education and if I do not have the answer immediately, you can be sure that finding the answer is at the top of my to-do list. If you or someone you know is having difficulty in any of my listed subjects, please do not hesitate to contact me. If we don't make a good match, then your first session is on me :)
I started tutoring K-6th grade students when I was in high school and volunteering at the local elementary school. During these times, I was able to teach younger students the basics of mathematics and science while also making the learning process fun and communal. For K-6th grade students in math, I found that concepts were easier to learn if students were able to relate story problems to real life examples. For basic math applications like: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division I would use play money, food, and household items. For students who were a bit older, but still within K-6th grade, I used the internet for sites such as coolmath.com, funbrain.com, math4kids.com, and mathplayground.com. I also gave my students a copy of a math game called Zoombinis. For science I made projects that would allow students to witness physical changes such as freezing, melting, and evaporating water. I chaperoned a trip to the Great Lake Science center, in Ohio, and was able to further demonstrate how fun and eye-opening scientific processes and concepts can be for students.
In my opinion, study skills for each subject vary greatly. While tutoring many students over the course of a few years I have used different studying methods, as learning styles are unique to individuals. I also use many sites and dry erase boards. I like to emphasize vocal repetition for subconscious stimulation.
Great Tutor — My daughter was very reticent about the idea of having a tutor, but Ambyr was great. They hit it off right away, even to the point where a planned one hour session was stretched to two hours. Ambyr helped turn a dreaded project into something that my daughter is looking forward to completing. She also looks forward to working with Ambyr on mastering this subject. ...
